2013 Read List

Jan 01, 2013 21:47

Last year finished out at 40 books(recorded, totally forgot a few...). Would have been more, but got taken over by a couple novel-like fanfics(ex. one is longer than the first three Harry Potter books combined, I've read it twice, lol).

But still, different year, same drill...

Sticking to fiction/non-GN only.

bolded = currently reading
italicized = reading, but kind paused
striked = I started reading, but didn't care to finish
underlined = finished

1) Life of Pi by Yann Mantel- Saw the movie, now reading the book. Seems like everyone I've mentioned this too read this book in high school, totally recall it just coming out then... Either way, I really enjoyed it. I can see why they left off the one part they did for the movie though.
2) Insurgent by Veronica Roth- Borrowed from the sis, mainly just as another series for us to have both read and can talk about.
3) Battle Royale by Koushun Takami- Not the biggest fan of the Battle Royale... franchise? But of the manga, movies, and novel, the novel wins hands down. I'm kinda "whoa" over how damn near every student is made at least a little distinct and individual and while some parts I'm not the biggest fan of, it was still a good read.
4) Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter by Seth Grahame-Smith- Watched the movie sometime around the second part, but enjoyed the book more. Not too sure how I feel on pinning slavery on vampires than humans, white people, though. Even with the selling out of their own kind, human, felt too much like trying to make it out to be something humanity wouldn't do/go to war over/whatever on their own. Also, general comparison of "visuals": I noticed with the movie they made sure all the vampires Lincoln's shown killing/fighting are men(and the only female one is killed by a woman) vs. a couple of the vamps Lincoln faces in the book aren't just women but some older and generally more varied. Not sure how I feel about that.
5) Fingersmith by Sarah Waters- This is one of those books I've started a couple times because people proclaimed how good it is but never really got past a couple pages. Though this time I can definitely feel myself getting into it, decent so far.

Recommendations always welcome! I like zombies, dystopian/post-apocalyptic worlds, lesbian fluff, female main characters, not ignoring the existence of POC/queer folks/ect., horror, monsters of all sorts, mythology and some urban fantasy, queer reimagings, and 1950s-style parody/noir.
