So lately, what with my friend wanting me to help build a steampunk flight simulator mod, along with a convergence of interest by several people on my flist (I blame yuki_ona for publishing a steampunk novel), steampunk has invaded my brain a bit

Neat essay! I've been kind of baffled by the whole steampunk term, no matter how I've poked around, trying to "get it". But the way you wrote this makes it seem more understandable. Very cool! I'll have to keep poking around. Previously it was just frustrating me so that I was about to give up on trying to understand it.

Also I agree to an extent on cosplay, which is why in the past the only characters I've chosen to play were already somewhat close to my own body type (alas, being short and small-boned usually means 15-year-old-boys). But people can get really obnoxious about it, and it's supposed to be FUN. :/
