NOTE: SPOILERS FOR "MCKAY AND MRS MILLER" YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED :)
John Sheppard ever wondered what his life would have been like if he never had accepted the offer to travel to another galaxy.
That fateful helicopter trip with General O’Neill basically sealed his fate. The General pretty much ordered him to go down in the elevator, making him a personal assistant to the higher officer. But when John reached the base of the elevator shaft and was left alone, he thought it was a pretty cool place.
Literally.
People were everywhere in polar fleece.
He found it a bit disconcerting, especially the loud one with the loud mouth and the loud orange polar fleece.
But that man had become Johns’ close friend. Rodney McKay. Doctor. Astrophysicist. All round snarkastic team member that John secretly knew he couldn’t live without.
But when *Rod* McKay came to Atlantis, John had to wonder what his other self was like.
He had confided in Rod, that he had more than just platonic feelings toward the Chief Science Officer. Rod simply smiled, patted Johns’ shoulder and continued playing golf.
He thought about his counterpart that night, alone in his dark room, his cold bed.
Rod had let it slip that his John was Mensa. Something that John had been offered, but politely declined.
Where Rod was smooth and macho, Rodney was abrupt and rushed.
When Rod was polite and concerned, Rodney was blunt and bossy.
While Rod McKay was well adjusted and sociable, his Rodney was a bumbling idiot when it came to the opposite sex. *His* Rodney. *His*, indeed.
He wondered if John from the other universe would be exact opposite of himself, like Rod was the complete opposite of Rodney.
The other John was probably as smart as Rodney. Not that he wasn’t smart, just that his other would be Rodney smart. Would the other John be as abrupt as Rodney? Would he be socially shy?
Would he have had the guts to take the jumper out on the morning of the Wraith attack and fly it into the ships’ hull; no thought as to his life, as long as the Atlantis expedition lived. That *His* Rodney live. That the other John wanted the other Rodney to live, at any cost. Even his life.
Oh no…would the other John have flat hair? And what was with Rods’ hair?
It was like he was Rod, and Rodney was the other John.
It all clicked together. The easy way he and Rod had clicked, the way they had the same interests and experiences. That Rod had told him that his John nearly destroyed a solar system, just like his Rodney had done.
So, John reasoned to himself, if he was considered a hero here, in this galaxy, Rod would be considered one in his galaxy. He’d gone on what was a one way trip to save his universe.
If he considered his Rodney to be a hero, saving the Team time and time again, then the other John would be a hero too, doing near enough the same thing.
It was enough to him. He was a hero in any universe.
