Yes! I love abandoned things and the like as well! The place Soph's talking about is called Gunkanjima, which you may or may not already have heard of.

Until this year it wasn't possible (legally) to land on the island. Unfortunately as of April you can go on boat tours to a landing point. I wanted to go see it when I was in Japan, but it was going to require too much time and effort, so I'm a little disappointed that it's so readily accessible now. Still, the photos are pretty amazing.
