Statistics on the acd_holmesfest exchange over the past 6 rounds

TL;DR: acd_holmesfest participants tend to produce PG-rated fic in the range 2000-4000 words, with a slight preference for M/M fic (almost exclusively Holmes/Watson) over gen fic, but with more gen fic than fandom in general.

Inspired by billiethepoet's recent analysis of the holmestice fic exchange, I did a purely descriptive statistical analysis of the contributions ( Read more... )

That's all really interesting, although as has been said none of it is particularly surprising. Fic length is interesting, the popular length encompassing everything from just over 2k to just under 4k - I wonder whether within that bracket there is an even spread or whether a certain number of words dominates.

With the gen/not-gen split I would guess to an extent there may be a certain crossover. I may write a relationship (Holmes/Watson or other) existing, but it's a casefic, so the relationship is more or less incidental and in the background.

Thank you for producing all the information.

It's not uniform between 2000 and 4000 words at all, actually. The real peak is 2000-3000 words (more than twice as many fics as 3000-4000). There is an even spread in the range 2000 to 3000, though. Thinking about it now, a bin size of 1000 words would have been a better idea ( ... )

This was awesome! I had made many assumptions about Holmestice before Billiethepoet made her breakdown and was surprised in some cases!

Being the matcher over there I"m always curious as to how much deliberate effort to skew towards a more diverse fest has or has not resulted in the diversity of works created. But alas, no control group. Don't tell me for sure, but I have a sneaky suspicion that not very much.

I'd be curious to know how fest-fic breakdowns compare to overall fandom breakdowns of type/length/pairing/etc. One of these days when Billiethepoet and I have more time I'm going to convince her to submit to a con panel with me to present on the statistical analysis of fandom, fests, and fic!

Oh crap, I totally meant to post that from my personal account, but don't want to be a wierdo and take it down only to repost it exactly the same. Sorry!

I think most exchanges have a recommended/required min fic length too, which will skewed the numbers a bit. But I'd suspect there isn't much of a difference between those that do and those that don't unless the min is significant to the exchange (i.e. Big Bangs ( ... )
