Some of us remain on here despite that, fighting a rearguard Pyrrhic action, ultimately doomed to failure as we are gradually winnowed.

Like Balin in Moria, there will be a place for a last stand until the Balrog comes.

Pretty sure getting all the servers dumped in the hands of a spy agency is the equivalent of a Balrog showing up. :D

BTW, just out of interest... :) How does one go about cloning one's journal for rebirth on Dreamwidth?

It's actually quite painless. You sign up for an account, then go into the "import" section and click a few buttons. You need to given them the credentials to your LJ account to siphon it all out, but you can always temporarily change to another password while you do it.

I've been hearing an increasing number of great reviews about the LJ->DW move, and I'm seriously considering following suit in the following weeks.

If you do, please do clone the talk-politics forum. I'm sure there are members of it who would rather not see everything they post go through a sieve in Kiev.

(Okay, Kiev is Ukraine, but hey, I saw the alliteration and I went for it, yo)

(Going through a strainer in Ukraine? Hmm no same problem obviously.)

Is it possible to clone an entire community?

I just did a brief experiment - created a new members-only invite-only community on Dreamwidth, set my current account to that community, and chose "Organize -> Import" from the same menu I used before. All the import settings are there, same as when I used them.

So, it appears to be possible...

LJ has been owned by a Russian company for a while. The company is owned by Mamut who would do anything KGB tells him and release any info KGB needed voluntarily anyway wherever those servers were located. No big change here.

Well, better than it falling into the hands of Caliban, or those damn Greek gods...

Oh hang on; I thought you said "Mahnmut".

Alexander Mamut, I think he is the owner of the company that owns LJ.

Are you trying to talk sense to those nice users? What for? Save yourself a hustle. Look what a nice link from the past they've found in a migration process. So much for the First Amendment everybody's so proud about.
