This view is very American, because, as you point out, of the common (but erroneous) conflation of "marriage" and "wedding". The first has a distinct and defined legal meaning, that does not in any way require, invoke or reference the latter. The latter has no formal legal definition, and although it tends to assume (or at least imply) the formal, it does not absolutely demand it, even though the two very commonly go together ( ... )

I'll be singing at a wedding later this summer where the bride and groom are already legal because of green card issues. I know because I was AT their legal ceremony. I don't know if they told everyone who's coming or not....Frankly, who cares? Why would anyone get upset about such a thing? Is it like, "Well, you're already married, so I don't have to give you a present now!"?

I found this sentence interesting: it still feels pretty rotten to me to have guests attending under the false impression that this is the real ceremony. Isn't it a REAL ceremony? Aren't there two people standing there exchanging vows?

People who are upset by things like this are the same people who thought pro wrestling was real and feel betrayed when they discover the truth.
