No, actually, I don't.

Very long ago, lightcastle asked me to write up a post detailing my stance against marriage.

Today is not that day, unfortunately (?). But I did just run across this BBC article that inadvertently raises some of the largest practical points. So I'll copy and paste some stuff over, and add in some commentary.

1) "There's supposed to be something ( Read more... )

On way out the door, but I offer you a line from a friend of mine -- "I don't need my relationship validated by the same people who validate my parking tickets."

Quite the soundbite. :)

When you're back in the door (I would assume once the run of shows is over), I'd be happy to hear your own thoughts...

Seems like civil unions are only available in Quebec, with Manitoba also having common law and Nova Scotia and Alberta having other stuff ( ... )

Thank you for your reply! As always, well thought-out. I'm so sorry I'm only getting to it now. It's been a crazy week (and still ongoing; have a Latin midterm in 7 hours, woohoo). On the subject of which: I hope what follows will make sense, as it's 4:00 and I've not slept much in the past few days ( ... )

Ok, I've thought this through, and I'm still baffled at the disownership of a legitimate and good question. AND I don't like that my response is now decontextualised.

So I'm going to be a jerk, I guess? I think that, in limited quantities, I can live with being a jerk. I'll just leave the pertinent userid out of the equation.

Subject: i was going to say something

but then telso did.

and for the record, this: "also an institution with a
bountifully-documented misogynistic streak throughout its entire history
(and I would argue to the current day)"

simply isn't true. modern family law lays too much of the burden on men,
somehow thinking degraded fathers are in the children's best interest.
this is real institutional sexism reinforcing the same gender stereotypes
that you hate regarding men as default breadwinners.

if you can name one real tangible way men benefit at the expense of women
from a state sanctioned marriage contract, i'm all ears.

There. Now I'm actually answering a question instead of talking to myself.

Well, I've been thinking about a whole lot of this lately... My own post about it all has been added to my journal.

Oh, wonderful! I will read it when on break. :) Or else when I get home from work. But I will definitely read it! I'm very interested to see what your take on all this is.
