Sam was having a good dream. This was unusual for her, at least lately; she either didn't dream at all or had vague, unsettling dreams about losing the baby and fighting with Jack. But this one was very nice, although she couldn't make out much of it other than being in a warm, cozy bed under layers of quilts ( Read more... )

"Mmm. Merry Christmas to me," Jack said drowsily, tugging Sam a little so that she was half on top of him. It felt like snow was falling, which might have been a stupid thing to say but you didn't live in Minnesota and Colorado all your life without knowing what snow weather felt like.

"Sleep a little longer?"

"Yeah. More sleep." She was warm and comfy where she was, and snuggled up against him more comfortably, but she was hungry too, craving coffee and breakfast. So after a minute she rolled over and opened her eyes--and then sat straight up, holding the blanket to her chest.

"Jack," she said, prodding him in the shoulder. "Wake up and look at this."

"I thought we were sleeping," Jack said grumpily, burying himself beneath the pillows and blankets. "Not ready to get up yet, Carter. Retired now."

"No, really," Sam insisted, tugging at the blankets. "You need to see this. It isn't the island." There was a plaid robe hanging nearby, and she pulled it on, shivering a little as she peeked out the window.

"It's your cabin, Jack. We're at your cabin in Minnesota."

She'd never been there with snow on the ground, but she recognized it well enough. Instead of the cluster of New Atlantis huts outside the window, there were trees and snow and an iced-over pond she was pretty sure didn't have any fish in it.
