It had been a pleasant evening. Sam and Jack had spent part of it, after dinner, on the porch, enjoying the cooler evening air. "Yeah, I'm about ready to turn in myself," Jack agreed, squinting a little over the lure he was tying. His eyes weren't bad, for fifty, but they weren't anything like they used to be and when he was dealing with fiddly shit, it was hard to make out the little details.

"Can you come see if I tied this right?"

"Sure." She carefully dislodged the cat, putting her on the floor of the porch. Socks trotted off indignantly and curled up a few feet away to begin washing her face. Sam leaned over Jack's shoulder to look at the fly. "Here, hold it and I'll tie that again for you. My fingers are smaller."

"Never heard you complaining about my fat fingers before," Jack grumbled, but held the fly for her so she could tie it. It was nice, being domestic with Sam, and a big change from how they were a year ago, two years ago. When they were CO and 2IC instead of husband and wife, it seemed like a million years ago.

"That's not what I meant," she said, with a little affectionate swat. "Just hold it still a minute." She re-tied the lure and rested her hand on his shoulder. "Better?"
