One of the downsides to being an influential piece of the success and failure of so many musicians was that Matthew was expected to attend certain events. Attend and pretend to be interested in the people and the events around him. It was a flaw he found particularly annoying in wealthy society and he always preferred to bring a 'guest' along that ( Read more... )

Gabe likes partying but not parties. There is a distinction, an important distinction. Parties are where people go to be seen - or to put in an appearance and do their duty. Parties are full of people trying to put their best face forward, determined to be the coolest and the smartest and the most fascinating. A rampant popularity contest.

Partying is what happens in the back rooms with people who actually know how to have fun.

But even so - it's been a while since he's been to something like this - and the food is decent, the wine expensive, the people beautiful, though he can't help but smile - he manages, just, not to let it become a smirk - at the sixteen year old pop stars and their belief they know it all.

Or the seventeen year old ones (twins) who have taken a liking to him.

Do you play anything at all?

I play a little Wii now and then.

She laughs as if that's the funniest thing in the universe.

No, I mean, like, an instrument. Silly.

Oh, I play a little cello. If she mentions his name to the right person later she' ( ... )

Matthew doesn't like parties. He doesn't give two cents about the popularity contest either. He shows his face because he is expected to. Because if he did not people would ask him questions. People would whisper about what he does with all his free time and why he never shows an interest in the careers he helps build.

He attends them so he can keep his privacy, and the money that comes with his job. Without them, there would be even less of a point to his continued existence.

He's impressed by the way Gabe handles the party. The people at the party. He's unsurprisingly well suited to this, being a musician himself. But Matthew is pleased by the way he handles himself.

He's had his share of polite conversation so far. Smiles and charm and properly chosen words to keep up the image that he gives a single fuck about any of these people.

"Enjoying yourself?" He offers a glass of the expensive champagne to Gabe. He's not actually a fan of the stuff himself, but it is free.

And Gabe smiles at him, it's a really amazing smile, as if Matthew is not the only guy in the room, but, golly gosh, the only boy in the world. He smiles, and follows it with a brief but evident arm around the waist which slides into a kiss on the cheek that lasts just a moment longer than appropriate. It all seems so easy but it's all so deliberate. It's all about making clear statements to everyone else, statements he doesn't believe Matthew would believe for a moment.

"Thanks,"

And as he slides his arm out again he takes the champagne.

"Of course, I'm having a great time, Cherish - "

Seriously, who names their kid that?

"Was just telling me how much you've done for her. You're like the hot gay father she doesn't have."

And this time the smile is completely sincere and even wider, he's looking Matthew in the eye and he's clearly very, very amused and entertained.

Matthew doesn't believe them. This is what he pays Gabe for. But he appreciates them. Is pleased by how easy it would be for everyone else to believe them.

He smiles pleasantly at the young pop star, a false fondness and pride he has become exceptionally good at projecting, when in truth he can barely stand the sound of her music.

"It's been such a pleasure watching you find your place." And then towards Gabe, his own arm sliding around the man for a moment in reciprocation, fingers curling just above his hip with a light squeeze before they're gone again.

That smile he flashes her is the one that has helped him get so far. Charming and sweet and natural in appearance.

"Don't let her fool you with all that. She's such a talented singer, shot right up to the top of the charts. All I did was hand her the microphone."
