The Lost City

If I were doing a multi post meme (I would if I could, I'm just not eloquent enough), my all time favourite ep would be this one

I don't know, maybe it's the 7 years of build up that makes it so great, maybe it's the fact that they started writing it so long before they actually filmed it, but whatever, it's awesome.

At the time, I put it down to s7 being, well, dreadful (save for Heroes I/II, one of the best they've done in the franchise, even if the ending was poo). Let's face it, s7 was mostly exposition in order to get to that point - all their allies were dead in the water, they were defenceless, Anubis was about to wipe them out.

But as I rewatch it now, it is an awesome standalone ep/movie (it was a script for an SG1 movie after all). Continuum is the only one that can get anywhere near it for its sheer epicness. I loved Continuum - i know, there are a lot of people that didn't, but if you ignore all the s9/10 stuff, it's a good movie, almost old-school + Cam - but it simply cannot match this for the scale and effect that this movie had. If they'd ended it right after this, Anubis would've been defeated, Earth would've been saved, Sg1 saved the planet again, Hammond was awesome, where do I stop.....

The only thing that taints it for me is what they did to it in s9, and to be fair (I can be now, time has passed) they were doing it to set Cam up as 'the man'. Which was, insert Mitchell into it in order to be The Hero. Except that the premise was a bit flawed. Sure, in the context of the s9 ep, it furthered the plot, but it lessened the orignal episode/move. Surely his intercepting the missile was kinda necessary with Hammond's order of "defend that scout ship at all costs". I know, I know, it's tv. In real life, I hold people's actions to a much lower standard, but here they are trying to set a standard/bar that you aim for - why make it a blurry standard?
I
I know there are a lot of people that have a beef with Torri, and prefer Steen, but to be honest i) i don't think it makes a huge difference who plays the character in this movie ii) I think most of the reason they replaced Steen was due to chemistry iii) and subconsciously, they probably thought she looked a lot like Carter, and at that point, they were wanting to put Carter onto Atlantis. I can watch The Lost City now and see either actress in the role; I cannot however do that with the series, Torri owned Weir from that point on.

The only thing that made me sad by watching this was watching the special features beforehand. BW, you SOAB, I know it's in the past, but the way they talked about the characters then is sooooo "frustrating". But enuf said eh?
