I don't do quilting, but I totally agree about the price, coming from the knitting side and I know quilting is usually more costly and time-consuming than knitting. Even so, giving a hand-made gift is a pretty wonderful feeling.
As someone who crochets (among other various artsy-fartsy things), I always enjoy getting a handmade gift rather than a store bought. If someone gives me something they made, I know I'm special because you only give away things that you put blood.sweat.tears into to your closest friends who you know will appreciate them.
That's a nice pattern, and I think it should be lovely in the colors you mentioned.
I have long bemoaned the fact that my mother (and me) did not take better care of the quilts her mother made. They eventually ended up being tossed out, due to various things happening to them. They were true patchwork quilts, made out of all of the leftover fabric from when she made the clothing for herself and her kids.
