So I do most of my basic shopping at the Stop & Shop just down the road from my apartment. They, like every other grocery store on the planet these days, are putting in an organic food aisle. I knew this because when I went into the store last week there was one of those "please pardon our appearance yada yada yada" signs. Whatever. I have simple ( Read more... )

Oddly, I can sort of understand that. Because the aisle is the space between, but if you think of it the other, of the shelves themselves, they form islands. It's sort of a negative- versus positive-space thing. Like the faces/lamp. So while most of us, as children, assumed that the word referred to the space between (thus opening the door for us to never consider that it might be spelled "isle"). Someone who thinks about things the other way might have grown up thinking the word referred to the shelves, and therefore isle makes sense. And it seems odd that they never noticed the word "aisle", but for years I kept pronouncing "baked potato" as "baked batato" (thank you so much, dad). It's odd the things you can fail to notice due to the weirdness inherent in growing up.

Or I'm giving them way too much credit and they just can't spell worth crap.

Your argument is sound. If they flood the store and start dressing their employees in Hawaiian shirts and I can shop in a canoe, I will accept "isle" as acceptable. :D
