Informal Poll: How do you define play?

Feb 02, 2011 11:16

I am curious how people define the word "play".

I have decided not to provide context on purpose. If you require context, email me. You can use gatopreto@livejournal.com if you don't have another means to contact me. Otherwise, comment here.

Without context, I have two things that come to mind.

1) Having Fun

2) Pretending

Agree wholeheartedly.

I just spent 30 minutes building the Justice League Tower and turning one of my work id/pulley thingies into Batman's grappling hook. Best play today!

And with different context...1 and 2 above fit as well.

Any sort of BDSM flavored "event," I guess... one can play with a known partner, or with a stranger. I was about to say "pre-negotiated scene" but that's not really true all the time either... I've had chemistry with friends that's turned into play (i.e. spanking or whatever) with the negotiations.

Just looked at other people's comments... was this supposed to be about the scene, or... well, I guess you didn't provide context on purpose :P But now, as a novice gamer/geek, I agree with the above comments. Having fun and pretending.

Anything I do for fun, or that I would do for fun even if they didn't pay me.

Play, for me, seems to be identified as such almost after the fact, wherein I fall into a particular state of mental effort that correlates and combines the non-rational and the rational parts of my cognition ( ... )
