Zook To Finish Regular Season For Gator Football
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - University of Florida football coach Ron Zook will be relieved of his duties as head coach, effective at the end of the regular season Athletics Director Jeremy Foley announced Monday afternoon.
"It is clear to us that in evaluating our football program that something is not working," said Foley. "I accept full responsibility for where we are today and I feel this change is necessary for us to reach our goals."
"I want to thank Coach Zook for his extraordinary effort. No one outworked him, no one out-recruited him. There is not one single incident that led me to this decision - it has been a series of disappointments for all of us. It had become apparent that we would need to make a change at the end of the regular season and I thought it would be the honest approach to make everyone aware of that now. We will conduct a national search for a new head coach and Dr. Machen will be fully engaged in that process."
"Jeremy and I agree that this decision is in the long-term best interest of the University and the athletic program," said UF President Dr. Bernie Machen. "Our priority now is our upcoming schedule, with important games against Georgia, Vanderbilt, South Carolina and Florida State. I know Coach Zook and the team are focused on the next month and are committed to a successful close of the season."
"I take pride in the fact that we leave this program in very good shape, with a lot of good young talent and good people, " said Coach Zook. "The future of Gator football is very bright. Right now, the most important thing for me is to spend time getting my team ready to play a very good Georgia team. The players deserve that. The fans deserve that."
