The Fox and the Scorpion
Once, before the world was covered in towers and black dust, there was a fox. One day, the fox walked along the bank of a river, swollen and rushing with spring waters.
As the fox walked the bank, looking for a place where he might cross, he came across a scorpion. As all know, the scorpion is a cunning and solitary creature, known for its ferocity. So the fox was very wary until the scorpion climbed up onto a rock and spoke to him.
“Fox, I had hoped someone would come to this place. I need to cross to the other side of the river, but I am too small to cross the river. However, I know a place where the waters are more shallow and the river not so rough.”
Fox considered this. “And you want me to take you across in exchange?”
‘Yes, I do. I will show you where it is and you will take me across.”
“But I cannot trust you. You might sting me while I carry you.”
“No, no, I will not sting you, Fox. If I sting you, we will both drown.” Scorpion lowered his tail. “Will you take me across, Fox?”
Fox nodded. “Yes. You may ride on my tail. Come no higher, or I will shake you off.’
Scorpion climbed onto Fox’s tail and told him where he might cross the river safely. Fox stepped into the waters and started to make his way across.
“Fox, please Fox, hold your tail higher. The water is lapping at my legs.”
“I cannot hold it higher, Scorpion.”
“Please, Fox, it is touching my belly. I will drown. I need to be higher.”
“You will sting me if I let you come higher.”
“I will not, Fox, I will not. For if I sting you, we will both drown.”
“Very well. You may sit on my back. But come no higher or I will shake you off.”
Scorpion climbed up onto Fox’s back and for a while, Fox swam in peace.
“Fox, please Fox, the water is rising and it circles my legs. I fear I will drown.”
“You will sting me if I let you any higher.”
“No, I will not, I will not, Fox. If I sting you, we will both surely drown.”
Fox sighed. “Very well, you may climb onto my head, but mind you do not sting me, for we will both drown.”
Scorpion climbed up onto Fox’s head and held onto his fur to stay steady. Fox swam in peace once more until a hard rush of water pushed against him.
He felt the sharp pain of Scorpion’s sting against his head.
“Traitor, Scorpion! Why would you sting me? Now we shall both die!”
Scorpion’s voice was soft and sad. “I am so sorry, Fox. It is just my nature.”
