I think it's good for portfolio building because in some cases it allows you to shoot people you normally wouldn't have access too and can keep the images for your own use afterwards, but in other instances it can be hurtful. I've heard both sides of the argument, and I'm kind of the fence.
In this case the client asked if I had any images laying around I could sell, and since I didn't I offered to go shoot up a couple pages of proofs on spec to see if I could make anything that they'd be interested in.
I think it's wise to err on the side of not doing it, but it sounds like it was the sort of thing that you'd do yourself anyways, so that makes it an easier thing to say yes to. Have you showed them yet? How were they received?
