The situation:

I am currently running a 1.25ghz 1st generation G4 Mac Mini, with 512 MB of RAM. Wait. Definitely wait.

Granted, your financial situation may be better than I remember now that you're living in a house instead of the dorms, but still, it never hurts to have more of a financial cushion when purchasing something as expensive as a computer.

If it were me, I'd go for the self-built computer. The hardware hasn't changed all that much since 2003 (except, perhaps, there's more dual-core processors available and SATA has become a standard interface to connect hard drives to the motherboard) and you can get exactly what you want instead of having to settle in one area or another. On the other hand, it can get even more expensive if you're not careful.

I'm curious to know what OS you'd run on a self-built computer.

What would you do with your Mac Mini once you had your new computer?

A self-built computer? Probably Ubuntu with a healthy dose of WINE...maybe OS X if I'm feeling adventurous.

As for the Mini...that depends on if I get another Mac or not. The Japanese IME is incredibly useful.

I'm also thinking about having to carry a 50lbs computer to Japan with me.
