∝Transmission 025: Calm before the storm

Nov 07, 2010 21:53

[that familiar three-note chime precedes the appearance of DIVA over the Sphere network, her voice seemingly as calm and normal. But to those really paying attention, one might notice a slight edge to her tone, a hardness that isn't normally there.]

Attention all non-commissioned and field-enlisted personnel. Repairs for all damages made to the Uesugi have finally been completed, as have all necessary supply restocking and refueling. The fleet will disembark from the Gerostana base in three hours. Admiral Ganymede has reported and verified that a new line of investigation into the whereabouts of the First has been found. All crew are expected to be aboard their assigned ships when the fleet departs from Pallas, but will be free to travel between the two crew ships once we have left the planetary sys--

[the transmission fizzles, the image of DIVA turning to static--but only on the Spheres belonging to the otherworlders. a moment later, another transmission begins, but this one seems to be from a different recording device as the transmission shows an overhead shot of Commander Menaeus using his Sphere to communicate with Admiral Ganymede. and Menaeus appears pretty agitated as he paces back and forth, a lit neo-cigarette burning away in his hand that he seems to have forgotten about.]

--n't you see that things aren't right here, Admiral? Granted, things weren't going to be since we are trying to find that active Gate, but I read the reports about what happened on the IASC Crucible before coming here, and things seem different than I expected. Jaden did, as well, but that information... I checked the databanks recently, and certain things about it don't add up! I'm not sure why I didn't notice before. [he pauses to pinch the bridge of his nose with one hand] I've been trying to reach you for weeks now, and I'd hoped 'accidentally' flooding the ship and delaying our departure from the Gerostana would buy me enough alone time to somehow get through to you...

I'm sorry if I'm speaking way out of turn here, sir, and you can discipline me later, but you've got to understand that things aren't like the way they were on the Crucible! My lovely crew has been acting strange, and the others...well, they aren't any stranger than normal, though the poor blighters decided to play house underwater for some time! And those images in my head...

No, that doesn't matter. Something is going on, something that nobody around here has bothered to inform me or that delightful cousin of mine of, and I'm growing tired of it! What the hell is going on?! Why haven't you contacted--[Menaeus cuts himself off, dropping the neo-cigarette and gripping his head suddenly.]

[when he speaks again, his voice is softer] Come to think of it...have you ever contacted me directly during this--[the transmission cuts off]

DETAILS
And so, we leave Pallas behind us. Bet no one will miss those trippy fruit, the nightmares or anything else they experienced there, huh? Thankfully, everything on all the ships are as they should be, nice and returned to normal, so all areas listed in the crew manual are open!

But what about the missing personnel? Perhaps their fate is one that will be remain a mystery--or perhaps it was as simple as them being used to help with the terraforming technology and water relocation efforts on the planet. DIVA's broadcast was cut off, after all.

Speaking of, all is not well in the state of the Alliance fleet! Even the commanders have been noticing. If anyone wants to ask questions or leave Menaeus a message about what he said, he has voicemail box here. Or perhaps you'd like to reach Farix here, but if anyone wants to send any sort of messages to DIVA for the Admiral, they can be left here.

But for now, all the strange sightings and such are gone, but that feeling of unease probably won't be so easy to shake, especially if anyone happens to check the databanks. All information regarding the Crucible and any events relating to it will be completely gone; wiped out of the databanks' memory as if it had never existed in the first place.

In fact... That seems to be a running trend. Everyone's memories are a bit spotty, meaning that you can't recall certain events. They'll niggle at the back of your mind and give you the feeling that there is something on the tip of your tongue, but no matter how you try, you won't be able to come up with it. The memories you forget can be as minor as forgetting that awful stomachache that left you bed-ridden for a week after eating the cafeteria's "special" burritos, or the punchline to the greatest joke ever--or it could be worse. Maybe even you will forget whole spans of time... How much and what your character forgets is up to you. The effects will last the course of this plot.
