[for a while, Xacarb ignores everyone's words, demeaning it pointless prattle and continues to go about its work. it does have a lot of energy to gather and monitor how well the Gate will disperse all this energy, after all. however...it starts to notice the Gate's hum start to soften ever so slowly, the light growing dimmer and dimmer.] No... Afraid of death, eh? Being alone? Kinda sucks, I know. Thing is, you don't hafta be alone if you'd let yourself explore beyond your own kind.

[Xacarb stiffens and slowly turns to face the person who said that]

What...did you say...?

Oh... I think you heard me. Look, everyone feels alone sometimes. And no one really wants to die. Think about it. Who are you to decide we have to die for the sake of someone else? By destroying other universes, you're just doing the same thing to others that was done to you.

It is not a matter of being alone. I was always left to my work even when the others were around. We went to great lengths to extend our lives so we could see the progress of this universe and protect it. Without me, this universe would have already died billions of years ago!

You're afraid, that you don't deserve to win. That being the First means you can't be the Last. That evolution means change and change means old is replaced by new and new will become better.

[Xacarb doesn't turn around and continues working] It's not about winning. It's about preservation of this universe!

It's always about winning! Who lives the longest! Who gets the universe and who loses it. And when you're looking the latter in the eye? Are you telling me that you don't want to win?

Like I said, it's not about winning because I will win. It's a simple fact. [Xacarb smiles, knowing Turlough is getting colder]

Xacarb... [Oliver is still upset and frightened, but there's sympathy in his gaze now that certainly wasn't there before]

You're afraid of dying, aren't you? But maybe you're even more afraid of being alone.

But can't you see what you're doing? You could destroy your own universe and ours! You're making so many other people suffer the way you have. And for what?

[Xacarb turns, narrowing its eyes at Oliver] I will not die! Everything I've done since losing them has been a success! No universes have collapsed thanks to me! They live on!

They haven't collapsed yet! Didn't you hear DIVA? What do you think all this is going to lead to? I mean...how many times can it work? One day, it has to end.

I'm sorry. Really. But...you have to die one day, Xacarb. We all do. And it's scary. I...I'm scared, too.

But that doesn't give you the right to make that decision for everyone else.

[snaps] DIVA is a fool, the meddlesome program! She has no idea, no concept of death. She has not seen the rise and fall of countless civilizations and recorded how just how well they learned their lessons from the previous ones.

And let me tell you something: they never do learn. They repeat the same mistakes over and over. They are children who cannot take care of themselves! So it falls to me to play mother and father to a universe of fools. That is what gives me the right!

You're the last of your kind...? [For some reason, that hit a chord with Tieria. For most of his life, he'd thought he was the only one. And, even after finding others, he realized he wasn't like them at all. In a way, he was alone, too.]

You don't have to be lonely. Stop isolating yourself.

I am the last, but I am far from being lonely. I have always watched the life in the universe carefully and studied it closely, adopting the forms of the beings there. But while I did that, left my work to periodically check the well-being of the lifeforms in this universe, I had no others to continue the progress I was making.

That is all.

[then Xacarb turns its back on Tieria]

All? But that's not all, is it? You're sacrificing the lives of others for what? Your own selfish desires, to alleviate your own fears. Just what is it that you fear, Xacarb? Is it loneliness? Is it obscurity? What are you trying to achieve?

It is far from loneliness. I yearn for the universe's continued existence so I may study it for as long as I can. There is far too much to see and learn still, and I am not giving up that opportunity!

I figure there's a fate worse then death. If you kill everyone else you'll be the only one left. What happens then?

Personally I'd welcome death in that instance. What do you say?

gauntletmods March 15 2011, 23:14:40 UTC
I will not kill everyone. That program is wrong! [Xacarb clenches its fists]

[spins around, snaps] Why would you favor death?!

piloted02 March 15 2011, 23:26:48 UTC
Death would at least end it all. End the pain, the suffering... It doesn't seem so bad even so I don't think I can go quite yet.

You on the other hand? If I were you, going on the way (assuming I understand this correctly)? I'd welcome in it in a heart beat.

[snarls] You, young one, have no idea. You cannot even begin to comprehend living for as long as I have. You would never wish to give it up if you were in my place!
