I've just seen a fox run by. It ran on very stiff, straight legs, with a bushy tail sticking out straight behind it. It's the first live one I've seen. Yes, I'm an urban girl!
The closest encounter I've ever had with a fox was at about 1pm one day in suburban Bromley. It came out of a garden just a couple of yards from me, and didn't seem in the least perturbed by my proximity. I imagine that urban foxes are much tamer than rural ones, having become accustomed to the presence of people.
A couple of years ago I saw a fox in my back garden, which is rather more rural (backing on to a field and a wood). It was not long after dawn. It was having a great time tossing fallen apples in the air and trying to catch them in its mouth.
You're more likely to have close encounters with our foxy friends if you live in a town or city. I'd seen a few foxes when I lived in the wilds of the Herfordshire countryside but usually from a great distance (only once did a fox let me get up close and that was with a peace offering of left over chicken wings!) Since moving to Peterborough I've seen countless foxes, had pups frolicing in the back garden and made a mad dash to stop traffic at a very busy round about so one could cross the road in safety. They're such great beasties, intelligent and cheeky.
I'd never seen one before I moved to Edinburgh. Since then, dozens (there is a substantial wood just over the road from our house).
The best view was had by my son and I in the car park of Braehead Arena in Glasgow after we'd been to see an evening of wrestling. The beast trotted out from under a large truck, then proceeded to snuffle about for ages, totally unconcerned. I suppose we were far enough away not to be an immediate threat.
