Went to a funeral today in a tiny, perfect English village in Hampshire. Cottages with thatched roofs, an 18th century manor house, a black-and-white pub, a 12th century church - so beautiful

My mother used to say that she generally preferred funerals to weddings, because you knew how things had turned out.

And of course you get to meet people you haven't seen for a couple of decades, which is usually good.

I endorse your attitude. I often detect a sort of competition to outdo everyone else in cynicism, and I detest it.
