do you have access to a course management website? These could work well. Something like Moodle, D2L, WebCT, Blackboard?

The only thing I'm familiar with is the meetup.com site. It's designed around meetup events, but it does have a message board and cross-membership email, and a place for photos and files. And it's a great way to schedule actual real life interaction amongst people.

I've been working on technical projects for too long. I read LGBTQA as LGBT Quality Assurance.

phpBB would be a good choice if all you needed were forums.

Though you'd have to find your own place to host it...
