Need a recommendation.

Hi everyone. I have run into the activation limit on my CS3 and now I need a replacement for Photoshop, Illustrator, and In-Design. Recommendations for a more value priced software package would be greatly appreciated!

I've been looking at the Corel Paint Shop Pro X2 and the Corel Painter X2, I'm not sure... help!

Check out GIMP and its NUMEROUS plug-ins and Inkscape both open-source, cross-platform and free.

Thanks for the recommends. GIMP is nice. I've got Inkscape on the backburner for now. I still have access to Adobe stuff on the notebook. But yeah, GIMP is really nice. Very speedy, which is what I like. I haven't figured out if there is a file browser, but who cares. I can use the native OS for that.

Don't forget the GIMP user manual. BTW the new Inkscape version works on pdf files ... even locked ones ... so the fancy and expensive Adobe Acrobat is unnecessary anymore as well ...

There is no GIMP file browser I think ... check this out regarding that ...

I'm becoming severely addicted to open source and FREE!

Well the nice thing about Paint Shop Pro is that it does both Vector (Illustrator) and Raster (photo shop) images. So you could in theory kill two birds with one stone. But a caution, PSP was created for the Raster images, so that is clearly it's strong suit, if you have intensive Vector work it may be difficult to get good results from.

I'm still trying to give PSP a chance, but the trial version is very slow on my machine. As I was saying to loodje, I have access to stuffs on another machine, so I'm okay on Vec for now. As I put all my little tools in their respective buckets, I find I need the Photoshop replacement on the desktop the most. I'd like to give Corel a chance, but again it's so slow!

GIMP on the other hand..

torrents.

if you must, you could always get a student to get it for you -- with their student discount. or, if you've ever been a student, and still have your college ID, you can still get a discount at Academic Superstore. they require that you fax over a copy of your student ID, but they don't check with the Uni.

alternatively, just get Fireworks and Freehand. Macromedia's answer to PS and Illustrator, and now taken over by Adobe, of course, but still available, still cheaper, and to some, still preferable.

Er... or... you know... torrents and junk.
