Hm... Go to this page : http://www.livejournal.com/customize/
Then, select "S2 : For users who don't know HTML or CSS, or make only minor alterations."
Go to "Look and Feel", select "smooth sailing"
Costum options, click on "Custom css" and in "» Custom stylesheet", paste the overrides =)
If you want that the sidebar appears, go at "sidebar", "» Sidebar Position", choose if you want that the sidebar be at the left or at the right of your layout =)

First, I really love your lay out! It's simply amazing *__* But I tried to use it with how you explained, but it's not showing ;o; I only see this standard lay out (smooth sailing) and not the gazette one T_T Maybe I did something wrong? ^^"
