Another Long Weekend instalment
So we're back from our excursion. Swiss Chalet chicken for lunch, followed by a trip to Super Pet for the kids (where we discovered Super Pet has been bought out by Petsmart, so we'll have two mega-petstores of the exact same bloody type), and then down to the park for the city's Canada Day festivities.
I'll tell you know, my arm is killing me. Painting yesterday was enough fun, but to add carrying Ian around the park for an hour or two, and it's aching. Good thing there's not much by way of lifting required to play cards tonight.
If nothing else, I got some vanilla fudge. Mmmm fudge.
So, something else....
Sporting allegiances!
I know pretty much nothing about sports. I freely admit this, despite the damage it will do to the masculine image most of you have of me... (*cough*)... and yet it's expected that I hav favourite teams for most sports. So how do I choose who to support? When I was a child I grew up in rural New South Wales. All of the Rugby teams were based in Sydney, so I couldn't choose a team based on location, but it was expected that I have a favourite.
So... I chose teams that had cool logos or themes or colours that I liked.
An infantile way of selecting, but heck, it's all I've got.
So who do I support?
NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves. Cool logo, cool colours, Kevin Garnett. I've liked wolves in general for some time, so this was a simple progression for me.
NFL: Philadelphia Eagles. Sweet logo, sweet jersey, almost won me a steak dinner two seasons ago. It's just a sharp look, and having some excellent players doesn't hurt.
NHL: Phoenix Coyotes. My wife tells me I like the Leafs, but I'm thinking I like the Phoenix logo. A few years back I saw a family in a store, each member with their own jersey from a different team, and I recall thinking the old Coyotes logo was fun. The new one's less fun, but more thematic. I approve.
CHL: Hamilton Bulldogs. Okay, this one's local - they're the only team I've seen play twice. I still don't pretend to really understand hockey, but you I have to support at least one local team.
CFL: As much as my father-in-law would want me to support the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, I gotta go with the Toronto Argonauts. Went to see the Ti-Cats play the other day, and the cheerleaders walked past us in a line as they entered the stadium, and I kid you not, not one of them smiled. Not one. You're amidst the fans! You're representing the team! Smile, dammit! Anyway. my years of classical studies leaves me with an instant predilection for stuff with an Ancient Greek theme, so the Argos win for me. That and Mike O'Shea occasionally sees a chiro in the building where I work, and he's a very cool guy to chat with in passing in the corridor.
MLB: Tough call here. Either the Jays since I've seen 'em play a couple of times, or the Devil Rays cos stingrays are cool. I have a Jays cap that actually fits my oversized noggin, so that's a big plus for them.
NRL: Gold Coast Titans. New cats on the rank, I love the logo and based on my usual whimsy I've decided they can have my vote. In the past I've supported Penrith and Manly, briefly nodded at Canberra, and I do like Melbourne's logo, but the Titan's logo is cool enough that when I saw it I went ahead and bought a $10 watch on eBay with their logo on the face.
So there you have it. If anyone thinks of any sports that they'd like me to pick a team for based on my own peculiar tastes and complete lack of knowledge, please just pipe up!
