Chapter 1- Out to Sea
Cria cringed as the sailor holding her squeezed her arm tighter. He had tattoos of snakes twining up his arm, and a red skull smiling from his shoulder. Her own tattoo, a triangle pattern seemed simple next to his snakes, but she and her brother, Durrikan (or Duo), were alive because of their tattoos. Their father gave them the tattoos when they turned ten. They were very similar, but the letters threaded into the knots of the pattern were different.
“I see you take well to the ocean, young Butcher Child.” A man drawled. He wore shabby clothing, that they were once fine garments. His hair was braided and unkept with red and black beads at the tips. “What’s your name child?”
“Who wants to know?” Cria asked. She knew that her clothing and freshly braided auburn hair looked a lot dingier from a night in the cells of the pirate’s ship, but she still looked better than this man.
“I am Rascal the Red, captain of this ship, young lady.”
She smiled a little, “I’m no lady, Little Rascal, I’m Cria the Midnight Walker, a sister of the seven times, Daughter of Cilia the Kisser and Billy the Butcher. You, sir, have no right to hold me.” At the end of her speech she flicked her foot sending a small ballast stone into the neck of the snake man. He collapsed on to the deck. “Now, I would like you,” she pointed to another burly man standing nearby “to bring up my brother.”
“Nice,” the captain said “your parents taught you well, I see”
Cria edged closer to the man, in a low voice she said “Raphael Silver, do not make me tell your crew that your father deemed you unworthy to be in the brotherhood, and instead gave the post of Daydreamer to your sister Daffodil, the daughter of a maid.”
He went slightly pale, then looked closer at her. He turned to the man, “bring up the second prisoner Viper”
“If that’s Viper, who’s this fool?” she ask, kicking the man she knocked out.
“That’s Mongoose, my second mate, Sister Midnight” he added the name reluctantly. “How is Mummy Dear?”
“Let’s think about this Raph, Cilia gave birth to twins, one at noon, the other at midnight. How do you think she is? Have you heard anything of the Kisser lately? If you’d stayed home to study like she wished, you’d know she was dead. Thirteen hours of labor, even for a sea hardened pirate queen, is an ordeal. In fact, it was a miracle, I was even born, Cilia died at eleven-fifty.”
“So you were born on Friday the thirteenth, at midnight from a woman who had died of thirteen hours of labor. Now I know why Billy rested everything on you.”
“Wake up former Daydreamer, I am only the last piece of the puzzle, everyone in the Brotherhood, even our other siblings are vital to the search for the treasure. It will take thirteen blood siblings to open the trove.”
“Ah then we need another sibling, Cria, there are only twelve of us.”
“That is where you are wrong, Rascal the Rat” a new voice came. Raphael jumped at the intrusion, but Cria smiled at her twin, “Father’s youngest will soon be three. She is the final piece, or hadn’t you heard, William married the Lady’s maid Cherry. They’ve had one more child, Impatients, The thirteenth Child of our father. Now Father, before he died made us promise nothing would happen to her before her fifth birthday, so your hands are tied for two more years.”
