Running around Arlington and D.C. 9-23-12

Spent the morning running around D.C. with my friend gramarye1971, went to Teaism, the National Portrait Gallery [was told to stop taking photos, so that's another place I can add to Avery Island that I can no longer go to...] Had a great time ( Read more... )

At a guess, I'd say the no-photos rule is because it's easier to enforce "no photos at all" than "only non-flash photography." But IDK.

Flash photos can be damaging to some works of art, and there can also be concerns about unauthorized reproductions. It's probably just easier to ban picture-taking outright. I caused a stir in a museum once by asking if it was okay to take some photos of some paintings they had on the walls. (This was a small museum in Dumferline, Scotland.) It wasn't that they objected to my taking photos; they'd just never had anyone ask before!

Well, I was recently in Lexington and went to the burial site of Robert E. Lee and they requested no photography and I complied with that request, though I wonder about that since he is actually interred in a crypt below the site.

People get weird about death and dead people. It is best to not argue with them, because they get very upset.
