I've been wondering why so many people link to journals of people they know in person (rather than referring to them by name). Personally, I don't want to be referred to as a screen name, especially by people who know me as more than that. So, when I refer to people, I won't link. It just seems impersonal to me.

Well, I know that I do it so that anyone reading the entry can go to their diary to read about them if they wish...also it makes me feel special to be linked to like that......my name is something meaningful to me, so it doesn't feel impersonal at all! :o)

I generally link by LJ name because I'm not always sure if the person I'm linking to wants their name associated with them on the Internet. I generally use LJ name if I know it, and just a first name if they don't. Maybe I'm just paranoid, but I don't want to give out people's personal information without their consent. And even if I know that they don't mind, I'm in the habit of doing it anyway and it lets readers (a) find out that this person they know I know has an LJ and (b) click over to read it.

One of the strengths of the Internet is the anonymity that can be available at times.
