Character Background:
Sam Winchester was born on May 2nd, 1983 to John and Mary Winchester. He is the younger brother of Dean Winchester who is four years older than him. His mother was murdered by Azazel when he was six months old when she interrupted the demon feeding Sam his blood. After that, John took it upon himself to find Mary's killer, taking his sons on the road and raising them to be hunters.

Sam grew up in this life until he decided that he was tired of it and wanted to leave. This resulted in a huge fight with his dad and he went off to Stanford where he met his girlfriend Jessica. Fast forward four years and Sam is 22, applying for pre-law. Dean shows up on his doorstep saying that their dad is missing and he needs Sam's help. After being persuaded, Sam goes off with Dean to find John, but it would be a one time thing and after that, no more hunting business. They don't find John so Dean takes his brother back to Stanford and Sam goes to his dorm to find Jessica on the ceiling, killed in the same way as his Mom. Dean rescues him and thus they embark on a journey to find their dad, killing all manner of supernatural creatures along the way.

After much searching, they find their dad who has acquired a special gun known as the Colt which can kill almost any supernatural being. The three of them decide to go after Azazel and kill him. They confront the demon and both John and Dean get hurt, so Sam takes them in the car heading towards the hospital. On the way there, the car gets hit by a truck, almost crushing the Chevy Impala. John and Dean are put into intensive care, but due to his injuries from the confrontation, Dean is in a coma which he may never wake up from. John trades his soul and the Colt to save Dean, leaving the boys without their dad. Nevertheless, they carry on with their mission, hunting evil and saving people. Sam's abilities begin to manifest again, prompting him to question their orgins. It turns out that it was all part of Azazel's plan to have "special children" to lead his army. Sam wasn't the only child he had fed blood to and the end of season 2, he is transported to a ghost town where he meets the other special children. They are put against each other and Sam survives until the last second, when he is killed by Jake. He dies in Dean's arms.

Dean makes a deal with a Crossroads Demon to bring back Sam. The price is his soul and the demon would come to collect in one year's time. Sam is determined to save Dean's life, exploring every avenue possible. His attempts are in vain though, because Dean dies and is sent straight to Hell. Sam is broken by his brother's death, falling into a depression and drinking to keep the pain away. He's approached by Ruby (a demon) who offers him training in order to fight Lilith, who is responsible for Dean's demise. The only thing is, Sam has to get out of his funk and get a grip on reality. This also begins his drinking of demon blood as Ruby lets him feed on her to strengthen his powers.

Four months after his death, Dean turns up, having been taken out of Hell by Castiel, an angel of the Lord. During that time Sam has been training and drinking blood; Dean is unaware. Sam has also become addicted to the demon blood, which has dire consequences for the future.

Abilities/Special Powers: Sam is foremost, a very skilled hunter. Having been trained by his father for most of his life, he knows how to use guns, knives and is proficient at hand to hand combat. He has excellent research skills and has an extensive knowledge of the supernatural world; particularly when it comes to killing the monsters that they face. Sam can pick locks, hot wire cars and assume different aliases and roles to investigate cases that he and Dean take.

He has psychic abilities, given to him by the Yellow Eyed Demon who fed him his blood when Sam was a baby. In season one, Sam had numerous premonitions and visions of future events, sometimes even months before. Sam also has the power of telekinesis and this appeared once in season one. Ruby, a demon, helped Sam to develop these abilities by letting him drink her blood and training him to use his powers against demons. In the fourth season, Sam used his powers to exorcise a demon through sheer force of will, making the demon leave the host. At one point, he even kills a demon but this is only achieved after he drinks a certain amount of blood.

Sam has the same vulnerabilities and weaknesses as any normal human has; he can be injured and mortally wounded.

The drinking of demon blood could also be viewed as a weakness. Sam can get high if he drinks too much and this makes him irrational, quick to anger, with no regard for his actions. It changes his personality and behaviour which could make him vulnerable.

Sam's ultimate weakness is Dean. His love and loyalty for him has been exploited on numerous occasions by those who seek to do harm to them Sam would anything for his brother, even die for him and this has worked against him in the past. His emotional ties to Dean have been open to blackmail and manipulation, often ending in a bad situation for the two of them.

Third-Person Sample:

"Did you hear any strange noises?" Sam asked gently, trying to put the terrified looking woman at ease. "Any flickering lights, scratching?"

He was being Agent Hamill today, interviewing the widow of one Henry Chalmers who died in mysterious circumstances. Sam found it easy to slip into the role of an F.B.I. agent, given the years of practice he had, using what Dean had taught him. Sure, it was against the law and all, but when they needed answers, sometimes the rules had to be broken.

Dean was out in the Impala, taking a "lunch break," Sam knew he was just taking a quick nap. He could handle this one on his own though and they were only doing preliminary checks before they would get down to real business of taking out the evil that had killed the victim. Sam was grateful for a case; it distracted him from the fact that Dean's deal was almost up. Trying to get his brother out of the deal was still Sam's main priority, but even he needed a breather from it. Sometimes it would make him unable to sleep at night; his dreams haunted by the thought that Dean could never be saved.

"No, I didn't," the woman replied shakily, bringing Sam out of his silent musings. "Why do you ask?"

"Just a routine question we ask, ma'am," he replied, still maintaining the polite and kind persona of Agent Hamill. Sam gave her an encouraging look. "I just need to go speak to my partner and then I'll be back." What he meant was he had to go to the car and get the EMF reader because he was pretty sure that the house was being inhabited by a ghost.

She nodded and Sam exited the house, heading towards the Impala and stopped in front of it, looking through the window; Dean was asleep, lying back against the driver's seat, snoring, but looking entirely peaceful. Sam smiled a little to himself, and walked around to the passenger side, opening the door before reaching into the glove compartment to grab the EMF reader. He switched it on, closing the door behind him, and made his way back to the Chalmers' house. He could handle this case on his own; it was pretty routine. Handling life without Dean?

That would be damn near impossible.

First-Person Sample:

[The video feed clicks on and Sam looks straight into the screen, face screwed up in confusion.]

Anyone want to tell me where I am? Because I sure as Hell don't think it's Iowa.

I was with my brother Dean before I came here. Is he around? He's shorter than me and really cranky.

Don't tell him I said that though.

[Sam begins to get a little frustrated, tapping at the screen with one long finger, as if it would give him answers.]

Does this thing even work? Damn it. I don't have time for this.

[He sighs, running a hand through his hair before he speaks again, his tone a little desperate.]

Look, Dean. If you're here and listening- can you come find me? I'm stuck in a weird looking building and there doesn't seem to be anybody else around.

I need your help, man.
