I haven't seen it yet but the trailers look impressive. I didn't even realize that was Karl Urban until I saw an interview with him. He's so cool. He really just exudes "cool."
Do make sure you go and see it - it really must not be missed!
I think perhaps that I shall be wearing my mini when I go and see it next, since it shall not be Central London at midnight lol... and the time after that, and after that, and after that... (I have a Cineworld Unlimited Card, and it may be the Trekkie death of me :-p)
hehe that would be the young Russian actor that I was complaining about ;-)
Actually, there is a certain irony in the fact that I was expecting much of his performance in compatison to the others cast in their significant roles, due to the fact that I have been following his career for quite some time, since his first big role in Steven Spielburg's television series TAKEN, in which he really showed great promise. His roles since have all been above par, so this was an unwelcome change. Still, as aforementioned, he did seem to adapt better to the role as the film went on, so hopefully in the next film (let us be honest, we are all thinking that they are already planning a sequel) he will be more up to his usual standard.
Still, you shant be bothered by his acting if he is your eye candy ;-) Lol
Is this Hollywood good or Fitting tribute to TOS good though?
The trailers make it look like it has far too much action. I mean how much action did TOS actually have? Even the first few (and best) films had hardly any. It was far more about making statements about society through the lens of science fiction... leave all the shooty stuff to Star Wars XD.
Also is the use of younger actors meant to imply this takes place before the episodes of TV series? It seems kind of odd that, after loads of sucessful missions, everybody major on the ship would all keep the same rank and not get promoted XD.
Let us be honest, if they did make an action-accurate depiction of the original series, not many people would want to go and see it. It is like The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe film - they added loads of action that was not in the books, because otherwise you have the big fight at the end but that is about it. You have to bare in mind the wider audience, outside of the established fans.
I personally justify the differentiations with the change in timeline.
I say give it a go, if you have not already. To be honest the plot has kind of been done before several times in different series - and indeed films - and the frakking with the timeline that changes how the characters are as a whole takes some getting used to, but really if you accept it as what it is: a reimagining, ala Casino Royale or Batman Begins (no mention of the evil that was Superman Returns) I really think that you could enjoy it.
