Kate, Jo and I assembled a few months ago to create our doubles out of an old Tshirt and, you guessed it, duct tape.  It’s pretty straightforward, and it’s not dangerous to the baby (I’ve seen him, he’s doing great!) because you don’t wrap the victim tightly.  It’s not overly pleasant to be inside ( Read more... )

You can also use a heavy dowel rod and a pre-cut wood disk from a home improvement store to make it free standing. Have the store cut a hole oin the disk to fit the dowel rod, then glue it in with wood glue. The dowel will fit up into the dress form and you don't have to fret over the form spinning from the hanger (like mine used to)
I made one of my lower half for fitting pants and skirts(since a good fit is so elusive for me...) and used the wire hanger thing for that one. You have to cut up the back of the legs, then retape it, but it's great!

It's the cheapo version of a dress fitting form. When you can't have the model right there with you, or if you're making stuff for yourself, it helps to be able to fittings on a comparable size/shape.
