After-Basil Explanation of What Happened [Video Post]

[Daniel appears on screen. He is clearly agitated, but trying very hard to keep a calm and professional exterior]

We have a serious situation, Manhattan.

Myself and four others responded to a call from an Andrew Basil on the network today. When we arrived, the man was in very bad condition and had a crab bite on his arm. This was by far the worst ( Read more... )

Fascinating.

...[very drawn-out silence]

You're not serious. That's it? You think this is fascinating? We've just found out that people are being transformed into mindless Godzilla monsters, and that we're all in danger of it happening to us.

I would hope that 'fascinating' would be a lot lower on your list of adjectives for this situation.

We do not know if they are mindless or not, only that they have been transformed. It could very well be that the pain of a sudden transformation like that has broken their mind, like many lycanthropes. Still, the fact that a creature would have such a unique reproductive cycle is indeed fascinating.

Alright, I suppose in a scientific frame of mind, it is fascinating in its own right. But a little concern for the people involved woulnd't be out of line.

As far as we've seen, they do seem pretty mindless. Rampaging randomly through the city with no thought for the people there - people that they probably knew while human - seems to indicate a loss of sanity. I do agree that the transformation could have been the cause of this; anyone would lose their minds after something like that.

[concerned] Hey, hey, Fletcher...don't worry, it'll be alright. We'll figure this thing out. No one else is going to get turned like that, alright? I promise.

What if they do though? What if there're people who are hurt too bad to find a healer? What if...

[determined tone of voice] We won't let it happen, Fletcher. We're going to do everything in our power to make sure this never happens again.

Is this the first time a transformation's been witnessed?

Yes. We didn't even know this was...was possible before.

I take it you're new here? I'm Daniel Jackson. When did you arrive?

Then is it likely that the virus has never been allowed to progress to such a drastic point, or is there a chance that other sorts of transformations might have been occurring?

I am; my name's Odin Lowe. I arrived a week or two ago.

I don't believe so. If there were other types of transformations occuring, I think we would have noticed sometime before now; bites are a pretty frequent occurance. I know several of the more biological scientists in the city who've been studying the crabs and their venom; from what I've gathered, the very worst case they've ever seen still only involved being extremely sick, with no sign of transformation happening. Even Andrew Basil (the man who just...transformed) appeared to only be in very serious condition. The first sign that anything was about to happen was a blue-green foam spilling out of his mouth right before he transformed. No one has ever seen that before.

Good to meet you, Odin. I hope you've found a decent (and safe) place to stay. The first few weeks in this place can be pretty hectic. ...Although, so is every other week. [dry chuckle]

H-how is that possible?

[a few sounds like he's trying to say something else but there really are no words for this]

[tired sigh] I understand perfectly. That's exactly how I felt when I saw it.

...I don't know, exactly. Apparantly the venom that the crabs inject when they bite slowly causes some sort of transformation in the host. Andrew looked like he had been infected a lot longer than anyone I've ever seen...at least we know it had to be the virus.

{silence}

{voice is very quiet/serious} I don't see how anyone would not believe you...that's not something you make up.

Even so...I-I can't help but say...I don't believe it. It's just...beyond anything I would have imagined to happen here.

[equally quiet/serious] I almost don't believe me, and I was there. At least I wasn't the only one, though...if anyone really refuses to believe me, there were four other witnesses on the scene.

It's true, though. It's horrible, but...it's true.

[pause; he's rubbing the bridge of his nose, trying to concentrate]

People are already moving to try and do something about this. I plan to bring up the issue of forming a smart strategy for hunting the crabs safely. I trust you'll be there? I already mentioned it to Harry; he wants to also concentrate on making sure everyone knows how to bear arms and work together.

We're going to figure this out, Risa.
