Netflix has Full Metal Alchemist now, my 3.5 year old loves it.
There's also the old standbys AstroBoy, Sailor Moon, any of the Dragon Ball series [depending on your comfort level with the fighting my kids love all 3], Inuyasha is also a favorite of my 3.5 year old though a little more teeny bopper depending on your comfort level.
My partner just chimed in to say he's not so sure on Full Metal Alchemist for younger kids, I can't find an age rating for it stateside but here in the UK it's got a 15 rating meaning unsuitable for kids under 15. My partner said that in the case of FMA he feels that it's too dark and some of the themes aren't suitable (in his eyes) for kids our sons age. YMMV however in whether you agree with it being unsuitable for younger kids or not though, in our house we've yet to find much anime we'll let kiddo (9) watch as we avoid anything with sexual themes, we're fine with most fantasy violence and even to a degree with swearing but feel kids don't need the sexy stuff. I'm watching this post for ideas though. :)
Yeah We're only a few episodes in to FMA but we only really censor graphic sexual stuff from the kids. My older daughter loves Chobits but never picked up on the sexual themes in it [however it did spark a week of chanting 'underpants thankyou please] She wore my DVDs out.
Maybe look into the monster hunter type shows; Pokemon, Digimon, etc Those are generally pretty safe and have tons of episodes.
This! And as someone else said Miyazaki. And while there is some violence in both Nausicaa and Mononoke Hime all of his other stuff is perfect for kids. My daughter (now 8) has seen both of the above but she watched them with me and we talked about what was happening and why.
I was actually just thinking about starting to watch Card Captor Sakura with my daughter! Definitely agree with everyone else about Studio Ghibli. Akazukin ChaCha is cute. And Mahōjin Guru Guru gets bonus points for the double geek aspect of being a parody of role playing games. Kodomo no Omocha is also a favorite around here, although we haven't watched it with the kids yet.
