Well, I got my daughter to stop, but I used nail polish as her motivation. She wanted to paint her nails and I told her I wouldn't until she consistently stopped biting them. This may not work for you. But perhaps some other sort of bribery.
If he's into science, you could discuss all the nasty bacteria and parasites he could be getting into his body. This worked for me as a kid. I had a friend who got pinworms from biting her nails and once I learned more about that, I quit cold turkey.
