Binge Watching

Mar 24, 2014 16:04

I'm starting to wonder if I should just binge watch shows from now on - at least dramas. The last few dramas that I've binge watched - Teen Wolf, Pretty Little Liars, and The Vampire Diaries- I really, really loved when I was binge watching them on Netflix, but when I started watching the shows on a week to week basis I've found myself beyond ( Read more... )

whole lotta tv, mini rant, the vampire diaries, episode discussion, teen wolf

*nods* I absolutely support binge watching of Shows that are completed. I think it makes for better viewing, better comprehension of story and character and ultimately is far more satisfying as an experience. Most of my shows I've binge-watched. I get frustrated waiting between episodes and crazy waiting between seasons and heartbroken if a show is cancelled.

My fiance Mike is definitely a fan of the idea of binge watching. He also gets frustrated having to wait between seasons and he also has memory issues, and even with long "previouslies" he forgets plot details, if he has to wait for shows.

There are so many shows that I want to watch that I have to binge watch certain ones to catch up. And I also get heartbroken when shows get cancelled, so certain shows I wait around to see if they're going to stick around before I start them, like "Hannibal."

But for the most part I don't have the patience to wait around for certain shows. Like I had to catch Mike up on eight season of "Supernatural" and I don't think I could have waited eight years to watch that show.

I don't actually think this has something to do with binge watching vs. one episode a week - it might, in general, but with those three shows, they all too a horrible quality-plunge lately. TW lost the plot somewhere during 3A, PLL totally jumped the shark after the Halloween episode of S3, and the way TVD handled the story line when Elena got turned (and just about everything beyond) has been appalling.

The closest I had to that with TW was Scott/Isaac, and I'm pretty much resigning myself to Isaac dying on tonight's episode, so I probably won't have that.

Urgh, I hope for you that they don't kill Isaac! :(

I'm not sure if I believe they'd kill another character so central and important shortly after Allison died. My money is on Danny, actually, or one of the twins.

That is true. And I do agree with you about where all of those shows lost the plot.

Thankfully, they didn't kill him and one of the twins died. But he's still leaving and the finale was still underwhelming.

I thought of you when I read the news about Isaac not coming back. :/ Sorry to hear that you lost your favorite.

The funny (not "ha ha" funny, but ironic) thing is that I skipped through the finale yesterday morning and I thought, "ooooh, that new fatherly bonding Chris and Isaac is doing is nice, I might have a look at S4 just for that". And then a few hours later I read the article that, nope, that wasn't gonna happen.

I'm seriously glad that Daniel asked not to be killed off and, even if he doesn't actively return to the show, we can imagine him being happy somewhere else. On the other hand, short of Derek and Chris and maybe a McCall family reunion, I lost any and all incentive to get back into the show. Everyone else I loved is either dead (Allison, Erica, and damn I somehow ended up caring about Aiden, so of course he was the one who died) or absent (Isaac, Deucalion, Cora, Jackson), taking most of my ships with them, and instead we get Malia aka the most unrealistic written character on this show (which is saying a lot, ( ... )

Thanks. It was not happy news, but not entirely unexpected. Given some of the evidence, I was still worried before the finale that he would either die or he'd leave town. And even though there was that ambiguous scene of Isaac and Chris leaving Chris' apartment, I thought even if they were going somewhere maybe it'd be like Derek and Cora and they'd come back next season. Though I guess it will be exactly like Derek and Cora, with Chris coming back and probably giving some lame ass excuse of why Isaac is still in Europe ( ... )

It's a very interesting point that some shows do better when being sucked up in a continuous stream during a binge-watch marathon, and others shine when each ep is given time to be evaluated individually. I feel exactly the same way, and I think it's generally flawed and badly plotted and/or characterized shows that benefit the most from a binge watching. Definitely something I'll be thinking about...

Yeah, I do think shows are that are fast-paced and/or have a lot of flaws but are fun can be good to binge watch, because it does get easier to not get bothered by the plot inconsistencies.

I'm a curious person and hate to wait. That's why watching a series in more or less one go is so much more fun. But I know that when I watch a series week by week I tend to remember the characters and storylines better in general. I often mix up stories and or guest appearances if I watcch it in one go.

Plus it also depends highly on the series. The whole second half of TW's season 3 for example was shot like one big movie. The story starts usually were it ended last episode and they're meant to watch it in one long go. The current season of The Walking Dead on the other hand could be watched weekly without any problems.

The last series I watched in one go was "Orange is the new Black". It was surprisingly good!

It is nice to get to watch shows in one fell swoop, so to speak because you don't have to wait for cliffhangers and all that. But having to wait to catch full seasons of shows sometimes takes too long for me. And I don't want to wait, especially since it's so easy to get spoiled.

I do think this season of TWD could easily watched week to week. Though I've been doing mini-binge watches of those because my fiance likes the show and prefers not having deal with cliffhangers.

OITNB is another show on my to watch list.

I have given up on TVD this season... I still haven't seen the last two episodes of last season. I am so, so, so behind.

TW I am almost finally caught up.

I just need 23 and 24... which aired last night.

I feel like other shows have taken a better interest w/ me such as Arrow, The Good Wife, Grey's Anatomy, and The White Collar...and SUITS is back.

SIGH.

I'll never catch up.

Never. <3

I totally feel you on feeling like you'll never be able to catch up. I also have sooooo many shows I want to start, and have yet to, like "Arrow", "Suits", and "The Good Wife."
