Love, Actually Take 2

Dec 31, 2014 02:24

On Christmas, I decided to try and give Love, Actually another shot. I watched it for the first time last year on Christmas, and I didn't necessarily hate it, but I was really disappointed by it. I think part of it was all the hype and how much people go on about it. Plus, I had my own expectations since I love Four Weddings and Funeral, Notting ( Read more... )

As someone who watches Love Actually ever year on Christmas, I've actually never considered half of these ideas before, so I'm really glad that you pointed them out to me. It made me think about the movie in a different way and I appreciate that.

Though, I don't think I'll ever be able to not love it, haha.

That's cool that it made you think about things that hadn't occurred to you before.

I definitely wasn't trying to change anyone's mind about it. I know it would be hard for anyone to turn me against a favorite of mine, no matter what.

To be fair to the Andrew Lincon character, he's not supposed to be filming the shots for his friend - they had a professional film maker who messed up the video and they remembered that he'd been taking personal shots and wanted to see. It wasn't that he screwed them over, it was that they ended up needing a look at something he had never meant anybody to see in the first place. It doesn't stop it being a bit creepy but it does stop him being an asshole to his friends, which I do like.

The thing for me about Love Actually is that I love it to bits but would never actually recommend it to anybody - it's a bitty film, there's some weird objectionable bits in it (fat-shaming, yay) and some other problems but if I turn off my brain a little bit, it makes me throughally happy to watch. Which is sometimes rather nice - but does in no way make it a great film! :)

I know that the AL character wasn't filming the wedding for them, so yeah he's not necessarily screwed his friend over in that way. My annoyance with it really was that, even this was just for his own enjoyment, I would think he would at least get a couple of shots of the friend he's supposed to care about. Plus, it wasn't just filming the KN character but the obsessive need to zoom in on her face and linger there that creeped me out.

I definitely get that. As someone who loves more than a few Adam Sandler movies, I understand the concept of just turning off your brain to enjoy something nice and fluffy (and occasionally stupid.) For some reason, I just can't do it with "Love, Actually" for the most part.

Well, I think "Love Actually" and the ones that came afterwards are "special" movies with like 10 different storylines going on at the same time and most of them not related to each other, and I totally get why people don't really like that...

I loved it, though, even though I have to say I enjoyed "Happy New Year" even more... This one is the one I'm watching every year and it has the better/more interesting characters if you ask me :D

I've actually liked other movies that have had big casts and different storylines, though most of them, like the movie Intermission don't have quite as many storylines going as Love, Actually, which might be why I liked them a little better.

Glad you liked it a bit better this time around! I love the movie so much but I never really considered the points you make so this was interesting to read. I agree on the Colin story, it's my least favorite one and the whole movie could do without it.

I have the DVD but have yet to have ever watched it. I didn't realize it was made up of quite so many stories!

Yeah, definitely a lot of stories. Off the top of my head there are about eight stories that are interconnected in some ways (some of the other characters know each other.)

If you like the writer/director's previous stuff and/or are a fan of romantic movies you could possibly like it.
