And with my parents it's especially tough because they had pre-conceived notions of what this would be like, so this, being different, is doubly difficult to handle.

Welcome to college. As lame as this sounds, what you're going through is perfectly normal. Many people before you went through it (myself included), others after you will go through the same emotions. But don't worry, it gets easier. Fall quarter is especially hard for this type of feelings because you see your family twice so closely together, right as your getting started.
If you are going to be in LA, let me know! I'm going to be up there from Saturday through Monday morning, and I'd love to spend new years with you!
