Eunhyuk had always wanted to protect the people he was close to. But protecting wasn’t enough. He came to realize, that sometimes, he had to look back, too.

Nobody knew, Eunhyuk calmed himself down as he tried to succeed in cutting his own hair. It did look odd, short from above his ears and long everywhere else. It turned out a mess, he admitted it. But he just couldn’t help how the situation had turned between him and Tablo.

Kissing back was something he regretted the most. It wasn’t good in ways too many, much less helped anyone. But why would Tablo even start? Why would he even agree on Tablo dealing with his hair? He didn’t know who to put all the blame on for this. But maybe he shouldn’t think about it so much. He hated how he was starting to sound like a character from a drama.

He figured he would deal with it later on. In sleep. He glanced at Siwon’s sleeping figure, yawned and slipped into unconsciousness.

**

The next time he exited his room, he spotted Tablo on the deck. It would be better to talk through the matter sooner than later because, obviously, he had no options. He cleared his throat as he approached Tablo with unsure steps. The man looked at him blankly.

“I’m sorry about yesterday,” he quickly said, bowing and earned a couple of stares from Alexander and Eli. Tablo smiled hesitantly, fighting the shining morning sun with his eyes.

“I guess you had all the rights.” Tablo’s eyes were seeking. For disloyalty, for the gun. He turned his leg and lifted the hem of his white new pants, showing just skin and grey socks peeking from the shoes. No signs of the gun. “I was childish.”

He shook his head rather violently. “No, captain. It was my entire fault.” He knew the best way to make it up was take responsibility, no matter what. Tablo studied him, now supporting his own weight instead of leaning against the ship rail. Pity was something he didn’t want anyone to feel for him. But it looked like Tablo did.

“Come,” Tablo said suddenly, pulling him from the elbow towards the stairs downwards.

He was properly woken and surprised by a soft hug sending shivers down his spine. It came so out of the blue he couldn’t even bring himself to get embarrassed. He didn’t know what had happened before Tablo smiled at him widely, to be honest.

“What is this for?” he asked, confused. He quickly checked if there was anyone to see, but seemingly, Tablo had taken him to the office. There were no signs of last night, he noted. As if it had been forgotten. He wondered if he had been forgiven as well.

“I should have known better,” Tablo stated, stroking his head all over. He closed his eyes, breathing in the scent again. It wasn’t bad at all. “I don’t really care if you’re younger. Or a bad English speaker. It was just the formality the job advertisement had to fulfill. I just wonder how I didn’t notice earlier.” Tablo chuckled against his ear, speaking so gently it made Eunhyuk doubt it was Tablo he was standing with.

He really didn’t know why he was smiling when Tablo planted a peck on his lips and laughed gently before leaving the room.

**

They started crossing the Atlantic when it turned June. Europe was the place they were next heading to. Eli had stored some more food for the longer trip, like professional cooks did. Eunhyuk was happy to know they weren’t going to starve.

“Do you believe in the Bermuda Triangle, Eunhyuk?” Tablo asked as they were lying on the deck, enjoying what the sun gave them. It had been raining a few days in a row now. Nobody had gone to the deck if not necessary.

“The mystery thing? I don’t know, really. I don’t know much about it,” not having read much about it he confessed, squinting to see Tablo’s features next to him. “Why?”

“I always wanted to know more. I thought if you were afraid that we were going to sail on the route,” Tablo stated, yawning. “No worries about that though. We’re passing it from its southern side.” Tablo turned to lie on his side, facing him. “You’ve been off recently.”

Oh. That. Well, he could say, that his worries never ended. “I guess it’s the rain,” he mumbled, not very reassuring. Tablo still dropped it. He hadn’t had too much time to deal with every single change in his head. He wasn’t sure. About many things. Tablo, he was high on that list. His former life.

Tablo stared and he knew where he was being stared at. It was the jawline that seemed to interest Tablo ad infinitum, take his time, turn him on. He wondered what was so great about it. But then again, he liked Tablo’s jawline - a lot. It was perfect, curving at certain points, making the jaw very soft and lips look buff.

“Would you like to sleep in my office tonight? It’s going to rain.”

The innocent question made Eunhyuk think about some inappropriate thoughts. What if Tablo didn’t mean just sleep? Would he be able to keep it clean and stay in the office? He always had the chance to back up and go to Siwon instead. The gun, he had buried it deep under his bed weeks ago. He wasn’t going to carry it around again anytime soon. He trusted Tablo. He had no reason not to . But still, he kept holding back when things started to get out of control.

“Okay. I guess we’ll see soon, then.” He stood up, leaving Tablo on the deck as he went down.

How could Tablo even be around him anymore, in general? He had pointed a gun at him. And not as a joke, was the important part. He still remembered he had been almost ready to press the trigger. Just a step closer and boom. Now, the shivers taking control of his body by just thinking about it made him close his eyes. What were his own feelings? It was plain obvious Tablo had a lot of warmth to direct at him. He wasn’t too sure, though. He was happy someone was willing to be close. He needed it, the hugs, the kisses. But he had a craving for his old life.

He had to feel something, he reasoned. Why else would he have felt so happy when Tablo had kissed him that sunny morning in May? Why else would he feel guilty because of almost shooting Tablo mortally? He couldn’t come up with any other explanation but that he cared. Tablo was something to him, was a part of his life.

He entered his room, Siwon looking up at him.

“I’m going to stay the night at boss’,” he stated quickly, feeling the need to tell Siwon he was. Siwon’s surprised face was confusing.

“He asked you?” Eunhyuk nodded as he started to put his stuff together. “You guys are getting along really well. He never asks anyone to stay.” His questioning look begged Siwon to continue. “He writes every single night. He needs his own time.”

“What is he so keen to write? Love stories?” he joked amusedly, mentally picturing a tired Tablo with his glasses on at the wooden desk, eagerly moving the pencil under his palm.

“Do you ever wonder where he gets all those songs? He makes music. It’s his life,” Siwon said, dimples glowing. “I’m so jealous. He can really give his everything.” Yeah, Tablo had mentioned something like that. About passionate working, when they first met…

“He is a good guy,” he stated, half to himself. He wanted to believe that.

**

It started raining early at night. He had changed into his pajama pants already as Tablo opened the radio for some news, a weather report maybe. He sat on the bed a bit uncomfortably, staring at the lean arms working.

“I wanted to show you something,” Tablo said awkwardly and he stood up to focus on whatever it was. Tablo led him by the hand to walk past the desk behind it. For the first time, he stood there, seeing all the paperwork and fine black pencils from the right angle. And suddenly, there seemed to be a lot more of those. “This is what I do.”

“Lyrics? But they’re all in English,” Eunhyuk breathed, feeling Tablo’s body press against his from the back. He lifted one of the papers, trying to understand some of the meanings.

“Not all,” Tablo said, smiling. “I have to tell you something.” He tensed up and swallowed. It sounded doubtful. “I wrote a lot the night after you came aboard. I did but it all turned out sloppy. It continued on until you slept here first time.” A warm chuckle echoed in his ear.

“Glad that I was of some help, then.”

“Yeah. I just wanted you to know that you make me happy.”

His heart jumped. Okay, maybe it was too early for sappy love confessions. But “happy” and “in love” were two different things entirely. He tried to come up with something more constructive to say than just “thanks” or “fuck off”.

“I’m happy to hear that,” he said slowly, mouth curving into a slight smile. Tablo’s fingers curled against his stomach while the lips were busy disturbing the back of his neck. They made their lazy way to the bed, breathing as they collapsed on it, Tablo’s weight on top.

He almost pulled back but as if reading his thoughts, Tablo settled on him to calm down, murmur soft words against his ear and listen to the rain drop against the deck.

“Beautiful,” Tablo muttered quietly. He didn’t know what Tablo meant, the rain, or him. But as Tablo once more laid those lips against his before rolling off him, he was convinced.

“The radio’s on,” he stated embarrassed. Tablo’s arms slid around him as they were covered with a blanket.

“It’s okay, Hyukjae. I have batteries stored.” He was happy that all Tablo asked for was the closeness.

He listened to the music of the rain, the dance of the droplets. After hours, he fell asleep with a hot radiating warmer over him.

**

It started out little. Tablo asked him to come over more often, twice a week, every other day. For random naps even. Their tour in Europe began smoothly. Performances were a bit more frequent and the active life made them energetic after a long while of sailing.

“It’s captain’s birthday soon,” Alexander stated, lifting him from his thoughts. He blinked. That was true. Tablo was turning to his 30s.

“Do you celebrate it?”

“Yeah. We always do, in the poor area of Spain. He and mine together.” Alexander flashed a smile, grabbing the rope ladder and lifting himself from the water. Eunhyuk spat out some water and did the same after Alexander. “He maybe doesn’t want me to ask this, but are you going to buy him something?”

He had money, more than he needed. He could go somewhere and buy expensive items and give them to Tablo. Then again, Tablo could go and buy whatever he wanted all by himself as well. He buried the thoughts of buying something. “We’ll see.”

Maybe something from his bag. Painkillers. That’d be awkward. Something very important? He figured it immediately. He would, he thought. He would give Tablo the most important thing he had. Without regrets.

**

“What’s the date?” Eunhyuk asked briefly. Eli looked up at him, surprised.

“It’s on the 22nd,” Eli said, focusing on the meat again. Eunhyuk fingered the edge of the kitchen table, nervous.

“And his favorite food?”

“Paper, for all that I know. Whoa, he has to be very important to you,” Eli teased smirking. He gave a murdering gaze. Eli was a burden when it came to this kind of things. And the only one on board to know what was going on between him and Tablo.

“Don’t joke around. I’m serious,” he warned, earning a laugh.

“Why don’t you go ask him?” Yeah, why didn’t he? Because it was too obvious. Eli was stupid to ask that, even though he meant just good. “He likes anything. Maybe it’s up to you. I bet he’ll like anything you have for him.”

Wow. Well, maybe that was the case. But if Eli thought he could get away with that, then he was fatally wrong.

“Well now, my friend,” he begun, “show me your best tricks and I’ll copy you.”

**

They landed and settled down in a tiny village with poor but easygoing people living in it. Hospitable, for sure. The party started comfortably, sun setting in the horizon and fire being set by midnight. Eunhyuk squeezed the bundle tight in his hands. The dancing figures around the fire made him nervous for some reason. Alexander pressed against his shoulder, whispering.

“Let me. Relax.” The bundle was gone from his grip, Alexander’s smiling face to him. “I’m so jealous I want to help.” Oh, yeah. Alexander wanted the chicken. And from Eli, it was. He felt a bit bad but stood up, joining the ring of people.

Dancing was his freedom from all the weird thoughts. He really had too much time to think. But as he laughed with the people he didn’t know, couldn’t talk to, it all seemed to vanish. The music echoed in his ears, bumping rhythm, giving energy to his spine to move muscles along with the music. He noticed he fit. He felt a part of the crowd, not standing out or disappearing to the mass of people. Freestyle in pairs and solos. He fully focused on dancing until he spotted Tablo staring.

It made him remember that the task for tonight was still there to complete. He didn’t have to do it. He just wanted, and he stood away from the crowd to reach Tablo’s cold hands. “Happy birthday.” Accompanied by a quick peck. “Dance.”

“No, I really can’t dance,” Tablo reassured, smiling. It was so warm and happy it almost made Eunhyuk sad.

“Let me guide you,” he insisted, pulling Tablo’s arm demandingly. “You can.”

It was weird, the first time he tried to dance like this. Tablo’s body so close he wanted to pause the game, show how it should be done, and then play again. But this was real life, Tablo stumbling and making the dance look like an awkward mess. But it was fun. His heart hit in his chest, bringing the sounds loud to his ears. The night was different, Tablo’s forehead sweating, making Eunhyuk actually want for the first time… Oh, the lips parted to breathe. He turned his head to look away, spotting Eli’s white head and Alexander next to him, talking very closely. He smirked. Alexander would finally get what he had been dreaming of.

Eunhyuk’s body stopped the movement, followed by Tablo’s. “It’s really too hard for me,” Tablo mumbled, embarrassed. Eunhyuk stroked the cheek, chuckling.

“It’s okay. It’s not like it can’t be fixed,” he mumbled guiding Tablo to the side with him. “That’s not even something you should learn tonight.”

Tablo’s face became serious in seconds, eyes darkening exactly the way they did when they had their first kiss. That was a bit scary to him. He didn’t have the gun now. He couldn’t use it to protect himself. How should he express it, he still didn’t completely know Tablo? But as long as things were in control, he figured, it would be okay. There were people around, eyes and ears.

Tablo’s mouth was wet, meeting his with possessiveness, speaking of unspoken words and hidden lust. He gasped, kissing back in a moment. Tablo’s hands were strong on his back, pressing and shifting. They moved, somewhere indoors, probably a place where there was a bed since he was dropped onto one.

“I want you,” Tablo whispered against his ear, making him let out a sigh as fingers moved somewhere under the hem of his thick hoodie.

“Then what’s holding you back?” It was meant to be a rhetorical question, which Tablo seemed to get, biting at the fading scar he had on his ear. He winced and squeezed the head above him, legs wrapping around the slim body. He was sweating all over, feeling cold but still hot. “Ah, th- tickles…”

Tablo snorted, kissing his lips again and he tasted Tablo, and salmon. And the sea. That was something that could probably never fade. “What do you want?”

He knew what Tablo wanted. There must’ve been years of jerking off, alone, even on his birthday. Or sluts. Eunhyuk wasn’t one, he was there willingly, at least almost, so that, Eunhyuk thought, had to be something Tablo was craving for. Something Eunhyuk could try to fulfill. Tablo was obviously careful to not lie against him, not laying his crotch against his thigh. He moved a hand down Tablo’s side, stopping on the lower stomach.

“It’s your night,” he breathed, staring into those dark eyes. Slowly, he brought his fingers to Tablo’s zipper, yanking it down. He couldn’t help feeling something in his own pants as well, when Tablo let out a sharp gasp. He accidentally brushed Tablo’s cock again, earning another one. It was perfectly calm as they switched positions, a panting Tablo under his gaze, carefully pulling the jeans off.

Tablo grabbed his elbow tight as he didn’t hesitate to take him fully into his mouth.

**

Eunhyuk blinked rapidly. The sunlight blinded his eyes as he sat up in his own room, sighing as the contents of the night before came crashing to his mind.
