The after party had been a blast, but, for Jongdae, it had been the biggest confirmation that Junmyeon was a huge lightweight.

Junmyeon had always pushed the younger boy’s allegations aside saying things like “I’m older, of course I can hold liquor,” “You wouldn’t know how to drink, you’re barely of age,” and Jongdae’s personal favourite: “What do you mean two shots isn’t a lot?”

He had never seen Junmyeon drunk; he had only heard stories from the older members about him doing something totally out of character, spending the night hunched over a toilet, or passed out on the floor. Then again, they had just been stories: He couldn’t trust the words.

He could trust his eyes. Jongdae smirked as he watched all of the boys lose their sobriety, but Junmyeon was a mess from the get go. After one drink, he started giggling at everything. At two, he started dozing off, but at three he had catapulted into a world of pure energy. First, he took off his shirt, then he started explaining, very loudly, about how much exo meant to him. “I mean, I love you guys soooo much. I spent seven years working for you guys and, fuck, you make me so proud!” he practically shouted as Jongdae tried to force his head through the discarded shirt.

Junmyeon’s movements became more and more slurred, blurring as much as the sentences he tried to articulate as the night went on. Jongdae laughed as Tao’s face was forever immortalized with an uncomfortable half smile next to the beaming and blushing Junmyeon, who had kissed Tao on the cheek seconds before after confessing how “he had made his mother proud”.

Eventually, three am rolled around and a few of the members were sobering up. Sehun and Jongin seemed to have an incredibly high tolerance. Chanyeol, Baekhyun, and Junmyeon seemed to be on the opposite end of the spectrum. Sehun helped walk Chanyeol to the van and Tao walked besides him, carrying Baekhyun like a large sleepy toddler. Jongdae lifted Junmyeon onto his back, piggybacking him as best as he could before dropping him into one of the car’s seats. Jongdae sat adjacent, pushing away his friend’s wandering hands and letting small smiles escape everytime he put his fingers to his lips. “Be quiet,” Jongdae whispered.

This continued until they returned to the dorm. Everyone was quiet in the elevator, the silence amplifying the final ring of the bell as the doors slid open. That and the beeps of their dorm lock stung the ears of the boys (many of whom were already slightly hungover).

A herd of tired and cranky boys filed into the room, not even bothering to flick the lights on. Baekhyun rushed to the bathroom, Chanyeol follower - his personal back rubber for the next half hour of vomit. Jongdae set out a glass of water and a toothbrush by the sink for Baekhyun and then turned, ready to go to bed. He was about to flick the lights off in the living room when he noticed Junmyeon laying on the couch, face smushed into a pillow. The older boy looked up at him as Jongdae flicked the lights back on.

“Were you asleep?” asked Jongdae, squatting down so Junmyeon wouldn’t have to move his neck. “No,” He mumbled, turning his head back into the pillow. He grunted a few more words into the pillow, Jongdae heard none of them, but responded with an encouraging “mhmm”.

Junmyeon turned to face Jongdae again, his eyes were puffy with incoming sleep. “I know you didn’t hear me,” he grumbled. Jongdae wondered if he thought he looked intimidating, with half his face squished against a pillow and his unwashed hair sticking up at odd angles. “That’s okay, Im too-” He tried to suppress a yawn. “I’m too sleepy to make a big deal out of it.”

The two boys sat in silence for a few minutes, neither in the mood to talk. They communicated with gentle glances - Jongdae’s inquisitive blinks answered by a twitch of Junmyeon’s nose or the looming threat of his heavy eyelids.

“We worked hard today, Jongdae.” His last whispered words before sleep claimed him.

Jongdae stood up and tiptoed into the bedrooms. Craning his neck, he scanned the room. With some effort, danced around the sleeping members and finally arrived at his destination. He picked up his prize after a few seconds of randomly feeling around the floor in the dark, his fingers finally gracing the soft fabric. The same grace applied, he found his way out, landing on his toes in the doorway. He made his way back to the boy sleeping on the couch.

Jongdae felt a slight ache in his heart as he noticed how Junmyeon had curled himself up against the arm of the sofa, the pillow forming a little barrier from the rest of the couch. Jongdae thought it looked very strange - dorming with M all the time left him unaware of K’s quirks - but it was also endearing that someone who seemed so composed during official interviews and whatnot would sleep like that.

Draping his prized blanket over Junmyeon, the boy curled up tighter under it’s comforting weight. Jongdae felt envious, he looked so comfortable. Maybe it was the the returning adrenaline from the party or a jolt of loyalty towards their leader, but Jongdae felt the need to climb onto the couch and curl up against him, wrapping his arms around to hold the small sleepy boy. He buried his face in the spot between Jun’s shoulder and neck, the older boy mumbling what sounded like a whiny “Jong… dae...”, but the younger boy was dozing off as well, his consciousness slipping away at a rapid rate. His last thought before he fell asleep was “shit, everyone’s going to be hungover tomorrow”.
