Final Fantasy 10 and 12 All of the Final Fantasy Chronicals/Anthologies (these are pretty cheap) Onimusha games are ok, a bit hack and slashy, but some story there too. Romance of the twelve kingdoms Dragon Quest/Warrior (I can't remember what numbers)
Ummm.. I'm a big FF goof :P
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. At least based on your likes listed. PS2 didn't have much in the way of strategy that was great.
Not mentioned, but Rock Band if you like the group atmosphere.
We have a couple of em that are fun and goofy: Outlaw Golf (2 I believe) NOt big into golf games, but it's fun. I like MediEvil. Has quests and puzzle levels and such. Destroy All Humans was fun.
I believe they made a version of Sid Meir's Pirates for playstation also. We have it on PC, but I think the console version got rated well, too.
I'll talk to Jerry and see what he liked playing, if anything on our PS2. You two seem to have about the same taste in games. The ones mentioned are mostly games I played, and don't fit exactly into what you listed.
Don't forget, the older (cheaper) PS1 games can be played on PS2 as well.

Other than that, I liked Champions of Norrath and its sequel.

Everquest meets console gaming? I heard good things about the Baldur's Gate foray, too.

I might break down and get a Rock Band, but the accessories are a killer.
