To offer an end of the scale--a friend of mine took her son to college for the first time--he's going to a great place in Quebec. Before they got anywhere near the place he informed his parents that they were leaving for home as soon as the car was unpacked. They did talk him into letting them stay for the barbecue, using the argument that there weren't any great places to stop between the school and their place in Vermont. He agreed, but only if they did not sit with him! Independent kids--we love up, but it isn't easy.
