ur comp turns off because of ur power settings. go to control panel, then display, then screen saver and fix the power settings for when you have your computer unplugged...

My options for "turn off monitor" and "turn off hard disk" are the only ones there and they both say "never" for both plugged in and not plugged in.

there should be 3 options for each one of those. Are they all turned to "never" or just the monitor one turned to "never?" Cause if they all are, then I have no clue what the problem is...Cause if the system stanby one is not on "never" then your comp is just going into standby mode thats the only thing that I can think of off the top of my head.
