family update

It was a really, really good thing that we brought the kids to the funeral. (Thanks, Cheryl and Rhiannon!) Somehow word got out, and so in addition to the family, a few people from FIL's department were there, including some whom he hardly knew. It would have been very weird not to have had his grandchildren there ( Read more... )

We don't need UK made--and that dairy looks very intriguing! But it probably is too far to drive.

This place is walking distance:

I am told though that it's mostly a (very pricey) bistro.
Then there's:

which is a short drive away. But I am less sure of their having English cheeses.

I was about to post a link to the first :-)

You could always just put the sherry in the trifle! Though IMO sherry is one of those things where good sherry is fantastic, and mediocre sherry is not worth drinking, so if there's any chance that you've missed out on the former, find a good wine merchants and ask advice...

Glad the funeral worked out. Poor Eli; though it was probably better for him to go and have an occasion to ask those hard questions than not to go.

oops, that was supposed to be a followup to your followup to Phoebe's comment, so "the first" meant caseus.

I feel that way about port--the good port I have had has been close to a transcendent experience. Bad port--ICK, like drinking alcoholic syrup. It is entirely possible I've only ever had bad sherry (when I think about my sherry drinking occasions--Senior Common Rooms throughout the Harvard campus--that seems highly likely). Hey, but it always tasted just fine in soup! and the trifle will certainly be getting its share.

It was good for Eli, but I also think it was good for Stuart. For the two of them, it was certainly the right decision.
