Going Not Quite Home

Jul 09, 2014 11:00

I am very good at keeping secrets and keeping my mouth shut in situations where I need to. My friend Merrihop was getting married, and Uriel and I were invited to attend. The ceremony was in Abeline Texas, but Uriel decided to use the trip to do something I'd been wanting to do for awhile ( Read more... )

Well, I lived in Tulsa 2005-2009 and I have to say I disagree. jorrocks_j July 9 2014, 20:59:28 UTC
I lived right across the river from the Riverwalk and it seems there was something going on there every weekend. There are miles and miles of bike trails, the Oklahoma Aquarium and a multiplex right by me. Near Downtown in the old Warehouse district you had myriad little restaurants, bars, and music venues. It seems I never lacked for amusement. And Tulsa was very green and hilly.

And I could bike to work and walk to the grocery store, gym and a walk - in clinic that took my insurance. Things may have changed in the five years since I moved away but I think I wouldn't mind moving aback

From what little I saw the economy was not kind to OKC, although I hear Tulsa is faring a bit better.

Uriel commented that he was a bit put back at how the capital city of the state seemed to bad off, but Tulas's always been more of a tech/industry hub.

It's nice to visit old stomping grounds. But also sad, as they remind us that time hasn't stood still while we were away.

Glad you had a good experience though.

The only thing wrong with where I grew up is just how crowded it has all gotten (NY) and expensive. Yeah it has changed, some for the better, some for the worse, it's really just the crowding that I hate. Well that and the repressive laws and taxes.

I lived in that general area twice.(November '04 - February '05 for the first time and March - June '07 for the 2nd). Second time around, I lived the last Month or so in Norman, OK which was a pretty nice town (due to OU) after living at a less than stellar apartment complex in south OKC that I had also stayed in the first time I lived there. Both times I lived there, I got pretty homesick for New England ( ... )

Home is where you make it-not necessecarily where you've come from. I grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee and it has changed greatly since during my lifetime. When my parents first moved there, downtown was dead after 5PM and on weekends. That began to change in the 1980s and the community began to take real interest in reviving downtown. I remembered when the Bijou Theater was opened to great fanfare by Carmike Cinemas. Last time I was there, it had been permanently closed as it's seven screens proved to be too small. It was replaced by the larger Majestic Theater one block away. Chattanooga did very well during the recession, landing the VW Plant at the height of the bad times. The citizens are very progressive and the city and county are very interested in creating opportunities for growth ( ... )
