Hi everyone - I hope this is okay to post here but if not, feel free to delete and I apologize in advance.
I am trying to determine how likely it would be for me to find 30-40 transgender identified people to interview for my master's thesis in clinical psychology.
I am in the beginning stages and just trying to figure out if this could possibly work. I would either do phone interviews or possibly email/IM interviews. All data collected would be completely anonymous. To be honest, I haven't thought of specific questions yet because first I need to find out if people are willing to participate before I go any further.
If you would even consider participating in an interview and you identify as transgender (MTF or FTM) please reply and let me know. If it turns out that I find enough people willing to help, I will contact you with more information. I've already got a lot of people willing to participate just from the transgender community on LJ alone.
I first posted this to the transgender community and I received a lot of questions and comments about how I should tell more about myself because people are understandably concerned about what any research results would be used for. I know that there has not been much research done related to transgender issues when compared to other topics like anxiety, depression, eating disorders, etc. which is one of the reasons why I want to explore the area. I am not transgender, but frequently question my gender identity as I don’t really like identifying as a female but don’t feel like I want to be male either. I guess I could call myself gender queer? Anyway, I am a 24 year old lesbian currently living in a house I bought with my partner a year ago.
My aim of this research is to contribute to the existing literature about transgender issues. When I graduate, I want to be a therapist and go on for my doctorate. Hopefully someday I will have my own private practice, which I really want to do. I am interested in some day working with people with gender or sexual identity concerns/confusion as well as people who want to transition.
I am sorry that I can’t give more details right now. I really haven’t thought of the specific questions I would want to ask, just because my advisor was concerned about me being able to find enough participants and we didn’t want to do any further work without first checking into that. Once I know more of what I want to do, I will check back in here and give the details. I am still in the very beginning stages of lit review.
I realize that the sample would not be representative if I only used people I find on LJ. I will probably look other places, like the local LGBT center, college LGBT groups, and there is also a local organization called Forge (For Ourselves: Reworking Gender Expression) mainly for FTMs and their supporters/allies. It would be great if I could find a range of race/ethnicity/ability/socioeconomic status/etc. and if I can get more than 40 people, maybe I would interview more!
Thanks for your consideration.
