anthropology of gender

 So, I am taking an anthropology of gender class this semester. For our big research paper, I'd like to write on a culture that accepts more than 2 genders. I'm looking for some ideas of cultures to consider. Please, please, please, no socieites from New Guinea & we are covering the Hidjras of India in class, so I can't write on them. don't know if the American Plains Indian concept of 'winkte' or two-spirit counts but it's worth looking at.

Check Native American tribes and ancient Sumeria.

Agreed. First Nations in North America is the most interesting to me. Today, they often use the term "two-spirited" as an English translation.

Would past cultures count? I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I believe there were past cultures in which more than two genders existed.
