Welcome to the club on that one, honey. I've read it, both versions, at least five times. Cover to cover. It remains my all time favorite Stephen King novel. Ever. Stu. Frannie. Tom. Glen. Larry. Ralph. God, I could quote long sections of it.
If you ever have about ten hours to kill, the miniseries is pretty spot on and covers a lot of the book. Frannie's character was pretty much annihilated, but as she's played by Molly Ringwald, I was not overly upset by this. The rest was too perfect to be believed.
Second: The Host.
I just finished it last week. I put off reading it until BFF threatened me, so I gave in. And couldn't put it down. It was so...omg heartwrenching there at the end. I didn't know WHICH way I wanted it to go, I just knew it couldn't end the way I wanted it to...and then it did! I cried tho, cried so hard when Wanda went under. Ian: I held you in my hand....
Okay, I'm gushing now. But yeah. I loved it so hardcore :D
OMG, yes, second the recommendation that you watch the miniseries if you can find the time. It's a viewing favourite at our house. Love the book, love the miniseries.
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was one of my favourite books growing up. I think I wore out the library copy. It was also one of the first books I bought on my own. In fact, the first book I bought after we moved back to Canada and I had access to stores with books in English!
The Host defied all my expectations also. I was very skeptical to read it but after the first couple of chapters I couldn't put it down. It was amazing! The only reason I think i read it was because I'm a huge Stephenie Meyer fan though.
Lots of good stuff here to put on my reading list. I have Ken Follett recommendations from several sources, and The Stand might even be on our bookshelf -- DH has a lot of Stephen King.
Very good post! Although I like the magnitude of the plot in the Follett books, I find his writing quite pedestrian. I can't wait to steal the Naomi Novak books from my son.
I highly recommend "The Story of Edgar Sawtelle." I finished it this weekend and I can't stop thinking about it. The writing is gorgeous.
