Doctor Who - Amy’s Choice
4.5 out of 5
(Solid 4. Bumped up for great depth and emotion and re-watchability)
Rory’s ponytail…ack! “I know…leaf blowers. Use a rake!” haha. I thought it was funny how the Doctor starts saying how he doesn’t leave people behind without checking up on them and then Amy buts in by saying you came here by accident. I also thought it was very interesting to see the three different reactions to the same dream. Rory is happy about being married to Amy and having a baby on the way. Amy seems confused about it all and was focusing on her rather large belly. And the Doctor says that it was a complete nightmare. The Doctor throwing the TARDIS manual in a supernova because he disagreed with it is humorous. I wanna look an old person in the face and say “you’re incredibly old. Arent you?” ha.
It’s great to see the Doctor and companions walking around the TARDIS in the different small sections. It’s the most TARDIS exploration we’ve seen in this new series. I hope to possibly see some actual new rooms soon. We are then introduced to the Dreamlord. Later we find out that this was in fact a manifestation of the Doctor. More specifically a manifestation of the dark side of the Doctor. And this scene sets the tone for the entire episode. The Dreamlord making fun of the Doctor and telling Amy that she must officially make her choice between the Doctor and Rory. Its here that we finally realize though he was not acting on it, the Doctor likes Amy. Or at least does not want to share her with anyone else. In this case, Rory. So she must chose which reality to live in. Life in the TARDIS with the Doctor. Or life in Upper Ledworth with Rory. (Got to say though, it’s a nice change of pace to see the Doctor running around Scotland rather then London like usual.) The Dreamlord is actually a really cool character. Humorous and evil but very cunning and smart. Very maniacal. Full of malice. Makes for a great villain.
Again as Amy is looking for blankets (which are later turned into awesome ponchos) we see the awkwardness between Rory and Amy in their relationship. He gets all excited and then quickly shys away when she looks at him like ‘what are you doing’. “We have to grow up eventually.” “Says who?” We can see that Amy is running away from things. Wanting to relive adventures she probably had in her head as a child with the Doctor.
For the record, do we know that ‘ice stars’ aren’t possible? I mean look Saturn’s moon, Titan. We now know that Titan actually has ice volcanoes. And if you look at the pictures or video of them they are incredible! Okay, moving on. CRAP! I want to hear how that limerick ends! Ha. Does anyone else find it funny how ancient races always seem to find Earth as a sanctuary from their destroyed land/world? The old people look like zombies. And man…I’ve always wanted to whack an old person with a 2x4 like that. Haha. The Dreamlord talking to Amy and saying ‘Anything can happen’ in the way he does does suggest that the Doctor has feelings for her. Interesting. I was pleased to notice that the music in this scene is music that we have heard many times in the past seasons. It was something small that made me smile and connect this season to others in an emotional way. (As music for me can unlock emotion.)
The Dreamlord is really beginning to cut at the Doctor towards the end. Asking if his companions are actually ‘friends’ since he doesn’t keep in touch with anyone. “Your friends never see you again once they’ve grown up. The old man prefers the company of the young, does he not?” The scene of Rory’s death in the dream world was handled perfectly. The mood of the scene along with the music. It was great. The Doctor’s realization that he let Amy down. Amy asking for help and then the subtle anger towards the Doctor. Brilliant. This is such a powerful scene. We see Amy make her choice here by choosing Rory. Saying that the Ledworth scenario was the dream. And that she was going to let herself die in order to wake up and see Rory again. And if by chance the Ledworth scenario was reality then she didn’t want to be there anyway. If she couldn’t be with Rory then what is the point. I was really proud of Amy here. She didn’t just make a choice but defiantly stood by it even if it meant she would be dead. And then you see the look on the Doctor’s face. The look of defeat and sadness. You could feel the pain in that look. The stand-off between the Timelord and the Dreamlord here is amazing. The look of victory in the Dreamlord’s face. Knowing that he wanted to win, but at the same time (since he is the Doctor) he didn’t. But he had to know. Had to create the scenario in which he would undeniably find out. The Dreamlord was a great way to see what the Doctor thinks and feels about himself.
Its also exciting to see the first real genuine connection between Amy and Rory here when he asks about the Ledworth dream. The last vision of the Dreamlord in the TARDIS console where he smiles was a nice touch too.
